Ashley Massaro was a WWE performer whose career included winning the 2005 RAW Diva Search, wrestling Melina at WrestleMania 23, and appearing on Survivor: China. Who was Ashley Massaro?
Massaro became known to WWE audiences after winning the company’s second annual RAW Diva Search in 2005. WWE’s announcement said the contest drew thousands of entrants and described the prize as a one-year contract worth $250,000. Those figures are from WWE’s own announcement, rather than an independent count or valuation.
In a WWE interview about her win, Massaro said, “The Diva Search changed my life forever.” The line captures how the contest opened the door to her public career, but her own account also points to a longer-term ambition: she wanted to establish herself as a wrestler in WWE’s women’s division.

In a 2006 WWE interview, Massaro spoke about breaking her leg during a match, recovering, and hoping to make her mark as a wrestler. That interview gives a glimpse of her goals and the physical demands she faced; it is not, by itself, a full record of her matches or accomplishments.

Survivor: China and WrestleMania 23
Massaro also had a television profile outside wrestling. CBS reported that she appeared on Survivor: China and was eliminated in the show’s second episode. WWE interviewed her about filming the season in 2007.
One of the clearest markers of her WWE visibility was her match against Melina at WrestleMania 23, as reported by CBS. The match placed Massaro on one of the company’s best-known annual cards, alongside her reality-TV appearance and Diva Search win.

How did Ashley Massaro die?
WWE announced Massaro’s death on May 16, 2019, with the statement: “We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro.” CBS reported the following day that she was 39 and that the cause was not known at the time of its report.
That contemporaneous report does not establish what was later determined, if anything, as an official cause. The sources cited here do not verify a later official cause of death. It would therefore be inaccurate to attribute her death to the Kuwait allegation, concussion-related litigation, or another cause on the basis of these accounts.

What happened to Ashley Massaro in Kuwait?
After Massaro’s death, her attorney made public an affidavit in which she alleged that she was sexually assaulted during a WWE/USO tour in Kuwait. She also alleged that WWE personnel discouraged her from reporting the incident. These are claims in her affidavit, not findings established by the accounts cited here.
The year attached to the tour differs across accounts. Excerpts of an NCIS report published by Fightful describe the alleged incident as occurring in 2006, while WWE’s reproduced statement refers to a 2007 goodwill tour. The available accounts do not resolve that discrepancy, so neither year should be treated as settled here.

What did WWE say about Massaro’s allegation?
In its May 2019 response, WWE denied that Vince McMahon or management had been told Massaro was assaulted. The company also denied that an executive meeting took place in which she was told to keep the matter quiet. This is WWE’s position; it is not an independent determination of what happened.

Fightful’s March 2024 article reproduced excerpts it attributed to an NCIS report. According to the quoted executive summary, investigators exhausted logical leads, had not identified a subject, scene, or witnesses, and closed the case. Fightful also reported that a Navy OB/GYN’s review of Massaro’s medical record did not indicate evidence supporting the allegation.

Those details describe the investigative outcome as reported by Fightful, not an independently authenticated copy of the report presented here. An investigation’s inability to identify a subject, scene, or witnesses does not establish that an assault occurred, and it does not prove that one did not occur. The reported medical-record review is likewise not, by itself, a conclusive finding about the allegation.
What was Massaro’s role in concussion litigation against WWE?
CBS reported that Massaro was among 60 former wrestlers involved in litigation alleging WWE failed to protect performers from repeated head trauma, including concussions said to cause long-term brain damage. CBS said the lawsuit had been dismissed and reported that WWE denied its allegations.
A plaintiffs’ appellate brief published by Court House News argued that the district court misunderstood aspects of the claims. Because that document was filed on behalf of plaintiffs, it presents their arguments rather than a neutral judicial finding. It does not establish the allegations as fact, and the brief itself is not evidence that the dismissal was reversed.
