The ranking below uses the next ten individual accounts in DataReportal’s all-account table, excluding Instagram’s own account and the organization National Geographic. Because totals rose throughout 2020, January’s figures should not be confused with December’s year-end snapshot.
Top 10 most-followed celebrity accounts in mid-January 2020
DataReportal’s Digital 2020 Global Overview presents Kepios analysis of publicly displayed Instagram follower counts from mid-January 2020, rounded to the nearest 1,000. Its table ranks accounts of all kinds; this people-only ranking removes Instagram itself and National Geographic, an organization rather than an individual.

How the ranking changed by December
A separate year-end view shows how quickly these totals moved. In an article updated December 3, 2020, AS USA reported rounded follower totals in millions. Ronaldo remained first, at 244 million, followed by Grande at 206 million and Johnson at 205 million. The remaining entries in its list were Kylie Jenner (201 million), Selena Gomez (195 million), Kim Kardashian (192 million), Lionel Messi (169 million), Beyoncé (156 million), Justin Bieber (152 million), Neymar (143 million), Kendall Jenner (142 million), Taylor Swift (140 million), Jennifer Lopez (133 million), Nicki Minaj (124 million) and Khloé Kardashian (123 million).
This is a December retrospective, not a continuation of the January table at matching precision: it reports rounded millions rather than counts rounded to the nearest thousand. Its broader list also includes fifteen names, so only its first ten entries form that source’s top ten.

Why other 2020 lists show different totals
Counts depend on when they were observed and how they were reported. Robyn Lucas’s News24 list, published February 3, 2020, gives a contemporaneous rounded top ten: Ronaldo (200 million), Grande (173 million), Johnson (170 million), Gomez (167 million), Kylie Jenner (160 million), Kim Kardashian (158 million), Messi (141 million), Beyoncé (139 million), Neymar (132 million) and Bieber (126 million). The article names Instagram, Daily Mail, Forbes and Just Jared as its sources.
Those February figures do not exactly match DataReportal’s mid-January counts, but they preserve the same order among the ten people. The difference is a reason to keep each list tied to its observation date and reporting method, rather than treating rounded snapshots as exact live totals or combining them into one ranking.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Medium Size Sign board in best Quality Vinyl. Strong Adhesive at the Backside. Clean the surface thoroughly before use.
- Ideal for surfaces like Metal, Plastic and smoothly oil painted wood. NOT suitable for whitewashed walls or rough wooden surface.
- Once this vinyl is taken out from one surface then its adhesive may not be strong enough for a second place. Peel and use simple plastic card, like credit card to apply it from one corner to another. This removes air pockets and gives a neat finish.
- Quantity: 1 pc of Facebook Sign and 1 pc of Instagram sign
- Long life Vinyl surface. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Weather resistant.

What the 2020 ranking says
- Ronaldo was the leading celebrity account in both the mid-January snapshot and AS USA’s December retrospective.
- The January top ten spanned football, music, acting and reality television.
- The January source ranks accounts generally, so a people-only list must exclude Instagram’s own account and the non-person National Geographic account.
