Keanu Reeves was booed during a 1990s performance with his band Dogstar at Milwaukee Metal Fest—not at a film event. Accounts describe a hostile reception for the band, but they do not establish that Reeves was forced offstage.
Why was Keanu Reeves at a metal festival?
Reeves played bass in Dogstar, whose sound and booking made for an awkward fit among the heavier acts at Milwaukee Metal Fest. GQ’s 2022 account places Dogstar on a bill that included Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, and describes the band being pelted with mud at Milwaukee.
What set off the crowd’s reaction?
GQ says Dogstar irritated the crowd by playing the Grateful Dead’s “New Minglewood Blues.” That detail helps explain the tension, but it does not prove the cover was the sole reason for the response or that every attendee objected to it. The contrast between Dogstar and the festival’s heavier lineup was also part of the setting.
Mental Floss’s 2022 account describes Dogstar being booed and reports Reeves recalling that the audience threw beer, told the band to “f*** off,” and yelled, “You suck!” Mental Floss quotes him as saying, “It was beautiful. It made me laugh.” Those remarks are reported through Mental Floss, rather than an independently checked transcript of the original interview.

Was Reeves booed offstage?
The accounts support saying Dogstar was booed and faced hostile behavior. They do not confirm that Reeves was ejected or forced offstage. “Booed offstage” therefore goes further than the available reporting supports.
When did it happen?
The incident is placed in Dogstar’s 1990s run, but the accounts reviewed do not establish the exact performance date. GQ’s 2022 feature, an excerpt from Alex Pappademas’s book Keanu Reeves: Most Triumphant, provides context for the festival appearance; Mental Floss and Nicki Swift also recount the Milwaukee incident. NME’s 2019 account likewise describes the band being booed and says Reeves later explained the cover was played as a joke. These are later reports, not independent contemporary documentation of the set.
