Spoilers for Richard Osman’s novel, The Thursday Murder Club. The book’s ending resolves both the murder investigation and the future of Coopers Chase: Joanna’s company, Bramley Holdings, buys the retirement community, while the club understands why Bogdan committed his crime and appears inclined to protect him. That moral outcome comes from a Penguin Readers teaching answer key, so it is best treated as a high-level account rather than a substitute for the novel’s full final chapters.
What happens at the end of the book?
The ending leaves the Thursday Murder Club with two linked resolutions: the case has exposed difficult moral choices, and Coopers Chase’s future is settled through a purchase by Bramley Holdings, a company owned by Joyce’s daughter Joanna. The Penguin Readers answer key identifies that acquisition as the property outcome.
The same teaching resource says the club understands Bogdan’s crime and his reasons for committing it. It suggests that the members’ affection for him, alongside their understanding of his motives, may mean they do not expose him. This is not a simple declaration that the crime was right; it is a deliberately complicated choice about loyalty, justice and what the group believes it owes someone they know.
Who killed Ian Ventham in the book?
The publisher’s description establishes that a local developer is found dead at Coopers Chase and that the club becomes involved in the live case. However, the available publisher material and educational answer key do not establish the full culprit chronology, exact murder mechanics or a clue-by-clue account of the reveal. Those details should be checked against the novel itself rather than filled in from film coverage or inference.

Why does Joyce’s diary matter to the mystery?
Joyce’s diary gives the story a distinctive route into the club and its investigation. In a PBS Books interview published October 29, 2025, Richard Osman said, “I think one of the funniest parts of the book was getting to read Joyce’s journal, or her diary.” He also described planning a small number of necessary story elements so readers can reach the ending and look back at what came before with a sense that it fits. That comment explains his broad approach to structure; it does not identify any particular clue or confirm a specific suspect.

No ending from the Netflix film should be treated as evidence for what happens in the book. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer discusses the screen adaptation, including Joyce becoming an official club member and that version’s resolution details. Those are film-specific claims. The available sources support a separation between versions, but not a complete, scene-by-scene comparison of their mysteries, clues or character histories.
For readers comparing the two, the useful questions are whether each version changes the key crimes and motives, which clues or histories it keeps, how it settles the Coopers Chase property question, and what happens to Bogdan and Joyce’s place in the club. The book outcome on the property and Bogdan is the one described above; further adaptation differences require checking both works directly.
