Directed by Chris Columbus, the 2025 film adapts Richard Osman’s bestselling mystery novel and surrounds its four amateur detectives with a police team, family members, and suspicious figures at the Coopers Chase retirement community.
The four members of The Thursday Murder Club
The club’s unusual appeal starts with its lineup. Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim, and Joyce are not professional detectives, but their combined experience, curiosity, and willingness to challenge authority make them formidable investigators. Each member brings a different approach to the mystery—and the cast gives every part of that combination considerable star power.

Helen Mirren as Elizabeth Best
Helen Mirren plays Elizabeth Best, the intelligent, fearless, and resourceful leader of the Thursday Murder Club. Elizabeth is naturally authoritative, strategically minded, and armed with a dry wit. She also has a deliberately mysterious professional history: her former career is described only as being in “international relations,” although it is clear that she has useful contacts and skills from her past.
Elizabeth is the club’s driving force. She is usually the person most willing to take the next investigative step, question an official account, or use an unconventional connection to move the case forward. Her confidence gives the group direction, while her hidden past adds an extra layer to the question of what she knows and where she learned it.

Her personal life gives the film one of its more serious emotional threads. Elizabeth is devoted to her husband, Stephen Best, who has begun showing early signs of dementia. She tries to protect him from the full reality of his condition, even as the changes affect both of them.
Pierce Brosnan as Ron Ritchie
Pierce Brosnan plays Ron Ritchie, the club’s comedian and combative political conscience. Once a high-profile trade union activist known as “Red Ron,” he remains an instinctive fighter for causes he believes are just. He is also a sports enthusiast, a West Ham United supporter, and a widower.
Ron’s approach to investigation is more confrontational than Elizabeth’s. He is quick with a joke, quick to challenge someone, and not especially intimidated by social convention. His close friendship with Ibrahim provides one of the club’s most important pairings: Ron supplies energy and provocation, while Ibrahim tends to respond with analysis and restraint.
Brosnan’s casting also creates a playful contrast with the actor’s association with James Bond. Ron is not a polished secret agent or a suave action hero; he is a politically experienced retiree who uses force of personality, persistence, and an appetite for argument. Netflix’s character guide notes Brosnan’s earlier connection to the Bond franchise through GoldenEye, but Ron belongs to a very different kind of mystery.

Ron’s family is also tied to the investigation. His son, Jason Ritchie, is a former champion boxer who later became a television personality.
Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim Arif
Ben Kingsley plays Ibrahim Arif, a confirmed bachelor and respected psychiatrist. Of Egyptian descent, Ibrahim is soft-spoken, cultured, empathetic, analytical, and highly intelligent. He notices details about people and behavior that others may overlook, although his caution and occasional pedantry can make him slower to act than some of his friends would prefer.
Ibrahim is the club’s psychological and analytical resource. His professional background gives him a natural interest in motives, personalities, and the ways people reveal—or conceal—their intentions. His observations are valued by the other members, particularly Ron, with whom he shares a particularly close friendship.
The friendship between Ron and Ibrahim helps balance the group. Ron tends to push outward, confront people, and make noise; Ibrahim listens, evaluates, and tries to establish what the evidence actually means. Together, they represent two very different but complementary forms of investigative instinct.

Celia Imrie as Joyce Meadowcroft
Celia Imrie plays Joyce Meadowcroft, an ex-nurse and recent widow who is new to Coopers Chase. Joyce is warm, chatty, thoughtful, empathetic, and eager to please—particularly Elizabeth, whom she quickly admires.
Joyce is not simply the fourth member added to an established detective team. She is also the audience’s principal entry point into the community. Because she is learning the social dynamics of Coopers Chase, viewers discover the club, its routines, and its relationships through her perspective.
Her nursing background gives her practical experience and an instinctive concern for other people, while her openness makes her especially useful in a community where residents may be more willing to talk to her than to an intimidating investigator. Joyce is the mother of Joanna, played by Ingrid Oliver.
The police cast
Naomi Ackie as PC Donna De Freitas
Naomi Ackie plays PC Donna De Freitas, a young police officer transferred from London’s Metropolitan Police to the quieter Kent area of Fairhaven. Donna is intelligent, observant, resilient, and determined, but she is frustrated by being underused in her new assignment.

Her unofficial collaboration with the retirees changes the direction of her career and irritates her superior. She also supplies a younger investigative perspective without replacing the four older sleuths at the story’s emotional center.
Daniel Mays as DCI Chris Hudson
Daniel Mays plays DCI Chris Hudson, a dedicated detective whose personal life has deteriorated following his divorce. Netflix characterizes Chris as socially isolated, badly dressed, and prone to comfort-eating, but he is still a professional investigator with official authority.
Chris functions as both a procedural authority figure and a comic foil for the club. The pensioners repeatedly outmaneuver him, while Donna becomes an important asset to his team. Their relationship shows how the retirees’ discoveries interact with the formal investigation rather than existing entirely outside it.
Family members and Coopers Chase figures
Jonathan Pryce as Stephen Best
Jonathan Pryce plays Stephen Best, Elizabeth’s husband. Stephen is a retired academic who has written scholarly books and enjoys chess. His early dementia is a source of anxiety for Elizabeth and gives their relationship a more intimate, emotionally serious dimension than the club’s comic investigations might suggest.
Rank #3
Stephen’s chess games with Bogdan Jankowski are a recurring detail. The games connect Stephen to another part of the Coopers Chase community while emphasizing his continuing intellectual engagement.
Tom Ellis as Jason Ritchie
Tom Ellis plays Jason Ritchie, Ron’s son. Jason is a world-famous former boxing champion whose career ended because of injury. He then became a reality-television personality.
Jason is important both as part of Ron’s family story and as a figure relevant to the mystery. Netflix identifies him as one of the characters with motive and opportunity, so his presence goes beyond a supporting role in Ron’s personal life.
Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Bogdan Jankowski
Henry Lloyd-Hughes plays Bogdan Jankowski, the hard-working Polish maintenance foreman at Coopers Chase. He initially works for co-owner Tony Curran and later for Ian Ventham. Bogdan is also supporting his sick mother in Kraków.

His role connects several strands of the story: the everyday operation of the retirement community, the changing ownership interests around Coopers Chase, and Stephen’s chess games. Those connections make him part of the wider circle of witnesses and suspects surrounding the investigation.
David Tennant as Ian Ventham
David Tennant plays Ian Ventham, a co-owner of Coopers Chase. Ventham needs to raise money quickly because of a large divorce settlement. After the death of Tony Curran, he intends to proceed with a redevelopment plan that would displace residents.
Ventham is presented as self-interested and lacking empathy, but the character is not necessarily best understood as a simple, one-dimensional villain. Tennant has described him as a man trapped in a difficult situation, which gives the redevelopment conflict more texture than a straightforward battle between good residents and an evil property owner.
Geoff Bell as Tony Curran
Geoff Bell plays Tony Curran, one of the Coopers Chase figures whose death helps set the larger investigation in motion. Curran’s connection to Bogdan and the community’s ownership structure makes him relevant to both the murder mystery and the redevelopment storyline.

Ingrid Oliver as Joanna
Ingrid Oliver plays Joanna, Joyce Meadowcroft’s daughter. Joanna is part of Joyce’s family story and helps show that Joyce’s life extends beyond her new friendships at Coopers Chase.
Paul Freeman and the wider ensemble
Paul Freeman is also listed among the film’s cast on Netflix’s official title page. The ensemble additionally includes the residents, staff, relatives, police personnel, and other figures who give Coopers Chase its network of relationships and potential motives.
Who directed The Thursday Murder Club?
Chris Columbus directed the film and served as its writer-director. Jennifer Todd produced, with Holly Bario, Jeb Brody, and Eleanor Columbus serving as executive producers. Netflix’s initial announcement introduced Columbus alongside Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley; the later official cast material confirmed Celia Imrie and the broader ensemble.
What is The Thursday Murder Club about?
The film follows four unlikely friends living at Coopers Chase, a retirement community. In the club’s original routine, Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim, and Joyce meet to discuss unsolved crimes and cold cases. Their pastime becomes considerably more urgent when they find themselves involved in an actual murder investigation.
That premise combines a traditional mystery setup with a character-driven ensemble. The retirees bring life experience and specialized knowledge, Donna provides a connection to the police, and the residents’ community relationships create a large field of possible motives, secrets, and misunderstandings.

What to read after the movie
Readers who enjoy the film can continue with Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series. Edition availability and prices vary, so check the publisher or retailer listing for the current selection.
Why the cast works as a mystery ensemble
The central casting choice is effective because the four leads do not represent four versions of the same detective. Elizabeth supplies strategy and authority; Ron brings confrontation, humor, and political experience; Ibrahim contributes psychological insight and careful analysis; and Joyce offers empathy, practical experience, and the perspective of someone still learning the community.
The supporting characters extend that balance. Donna connects the club to the police, Chris represents the official investigation while serving as its comic counterpoint, and the family and Coopers Chase figures create the personal and institutional stakes around the case. The result is a mystery ensemble built as much around contrasting personalities as around clues.
