The Thing: Remastered became available digitally on December 5, 2024, after a same-day release announcement during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted. The surprise was the immediate launch—not the first announcement of the remaster, which had already been revealed with a planned 2024 release window.
When did The Thing: Remastered come out?
Nightdive Studios announced that the game was available digitally on December 5, 2024. The release announcement appeared during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted. The project itself had been announced earlier; what made the December event a surprise was that players could buy it immediately rather than wait for a later release date.
The earlier announcement had given the remaster a 2024 release window. The official release announcement then named the digital launch date and platforms. Atari’s earlier announcement and the December 5 release announcement establish that sequence.
Which platforms received the digital release?
The official December 5 announcement listed Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. For PC, it named Steam and GOG as storefronts. Steam Deck Verified status was also stated in the announcement.

Nintendo UK’s listing gives December 30, 2024 as its date for the Switch version, so the December 5 announcement should not be read as proof that every regional storefront displayed the game on the same day. See the Nintendo UK listing for that regional date. Store availability can vary by region and may change over time.
What kind of game is it?
The Thing: Remastered restores the 2002 third-person survival horror shooter, a sequel to the 1982 film The Thing. The Steam listing describes the original as a game inspired by Universal Pictures’ film, while Nightdive identifies its work as a remaster. The Steam listing and Nightdive’s game page provide the respective descriptions.

Was it released physically too?
Yes, Atari’s 2026 trading update later listed The Thing: Remastered among Nightdive’s physical releases. That establishes that physical editions were part of the later release picture, but the update does not specify platform-by-platform editions, regions, retailers, or current stock. Check a current listing for the exact platform and region before buying; the update does not confirm present availability at any particular retailer.
The digital launch announcement stated a price of $29.99. That is the announced launch price, not a confirmation of what the game costs now. Current prices and availability should be checked on the relevant platform storefront.
