The Synanon Fix is a four-part HBO documentary series that debuted April 1, 2024. Directed by Rory Kennedy, it traces Synanon from a drug rehabilitation program into a communal organization and examines the controversies that marked its later years. The series is no longer upcoming; where it can be streamed depends on current regional availability.
What is The Synanon Fix about?
HBO presents the series as an account of Synanon’s evolution: from a late-1950s drug rehabilitation program to communal living, followed by criticism over abuse and cult-like behavior. Moxie Films describes the documentary as exploring that rise and fall through the experiences of people who lived in the organization. HBO credits Rory Kennedy as director and Mark Bailey among the creators and producers.

What was Synanon, and how did it change?
TIME reported on April 1, 2024, that Charles “Chuck” Dederich, a former alcoholic, started Synanon in 1958. Its “Synanon Game” involved confrontational group sessions in which participants voiced harsh opinions of one another. TIME describes the organization as becoming both a treatment facility and a communal living experiment. That history helps explain why the documentary’s subject is not only addiction treatment, but also the power and rules of a community organized around it.

TIME’s framing question—“What happens when a rehab program that is supposed to cure addictions becomes addictive itself?”—works as a provocative lens for the story, not as a clinical claim that Synanon or its methods were addictive. The reporting is available in TIME’s account of Synanon and the series.
What does the historical record say about the controversies?
TIME recounts later directives concerning marriage and childlessness, as well as the 1978 rattlesnake attack on lawyer Paul Morantz. The article reports that two Synanon members were convicted and Dederich received five years’ probation. It also says Synanon’s lawsuit against TIME was dropped and that the organization closed after the IRS revoked its tax-exempt status in 1982.

How was Synanon regarded at the time?
In 1961, sociologist Donald Cressey of the University of California at Los Angeles called Synanon “the most significant attempt to keep addicts off drugs that has ever been made,” according to TIME. That statement captures a contemporary assessment, not a present-day clinical judgment or evidence of treatment outcomes.
