Fifteen years before the main story, a storm-related tragedy in the fictional coastal town of Evelyn Bay left two young people dead and a girl missing. Kieran Elliott returns to town with his young family. When a young woman’s body is found, the investigation threatens to bring the old case—and other buried secrets—back into view.

The murder plot is the entry point, but grief, survivor’s guilt, family strain, and the way a community remembers its past give the story much of its weight. Showrunner Tony Ayres described it to Netflix Tudum as “a family melodrama disguised as a murder mystery.” That framing helps set expectations: the show is as interested in damaged relationships as it is in solving a crime.
Is it a good pick if you want a gripping mystery?
It may suit viewers drawn to a moody, emotionally heavy investigation that unfolds alongside family secrets. It is less suited to someone looking specifically for a playful detective lead or a puzzle-forward case with a brisk, cozy tone. That contrast is a critical characterization, not an official genre distinction.
The premise gives the present-day investigation a personal connection to the past, rather than treating the old tragedy as mere backstory. The result is a mystery built around what people have lived through—and what they have kept from one another—as much as around the identity of a killer.
How many episodes are there, and how long does it take to watch?
Netflix lists The Survivors as a 2025 TV-MA limited series with six episodes. The official US listing gives these runtimes:

The series premiered in the US Netflix listing on June 6, 2025, at 7:00 AM GMT. That date is historical; catalog availability and audio or subtitle options can vary by region and over time. Netflix’s US page lists English original audio and additional audio tracks, but that should not be taken as a promise of identical options everywhere.

Is The Survivors based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts Jane Harper’s novel, also titled The Survivors. If you want to compare the screen story with its source, Harper’s book is the place to start; the adaptation’s emotional focus is also reflected in Ayres’s description of the family drama beneath the crime story.

Evelyn Bay is fictional, but the production filmed in Tasmania. Ayres identifies Eaglehawk Neck as the filming area in Netflix Tudum’s series feature. The real Tasmanian setting gives the coastal story a specific landscape without making Evelyn Bay a real town.
