Nintendo and Illumination used the March 9, 2026, movie-focused Nintendo Direct to premiere the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and announce three voice roles: Donald Glover as Yoshi, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, and Luis Guzmán as Wart. Nintendo expressly said the presentation would include no game information.
What the movie Direct announced
The presentation was devoted to the film, not Nintendo games. Nintendo’s official event description introduced it as a Direct featuring the final trailer and stated that no game information would be included: Nintendo’s official movie page.
Three voice roles revealed
- Donald Glover voices Yoshi.
- Issa Rae voices Honey Queen.
- Luis Guzmán voices Wart.
Nintendo said Glover voices Yoshi in all languages and territories worldwide. The announcement followed Nintendo’s January 25, 2026, first look at Yoshi, which also said the US and many other markets would receive the film on April 1 rather than April 3: Nintendo’s January announcement.

When the film releases
The dates are territory-specific; April 1 is the US date and applies to many additional markets, not every country. Nintendo lists Japan’s release as April 24, 2026, and says select territories have other dates through April.
| Territory | Release timing listed by Nintendo |
|---|---|
| United States and many additional markets globally | April 1, 2026 |
| Japan | April 24, 2026 |
| Select territories | Various dates through April 2026 |
Nintendo describes the movie as an animated follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, based on the world of Super Mario Bros. Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo are producers. Universal Pictures and Nintendo co-financed the film; Universal Pictures is distributing it worldwide. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors, Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay, and Brian Tyler composed the music.

What the Direct did not announce
Nintendo’s event description specifically excluded game information. The Galaxy games linked from the movie page are a separate tie-in, not a game announcement made during this Direct. Nintendo describes enhanced versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 as playable on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Its FY2026 investor presentation identifies the combined game as downloadable-format-only software: Nintendo FY2026 investor presentation.

The January 25 announcement provided a first look at Yoshi and moved the US and many-market release date from April 3 to April 1. The March 9 US-date Direct then supplied the final trailer and named Glover, Rae, and Guzmán in their respective roles. Nintendo’s March 10 release describes the 2023 film as having earned more than US$1.3 billion worldwide. Separately, Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation reported that the earlier film earned over US$800 million worldwide in its first four weeks; that is a four-week figure, not a current lifetime total.
