Nintendo announced the official title, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, during the Direct on September 12, 2025.
What title was reported before the Direct?
A September 11, 2025 report by Notebookcheck connected domain registrations for localized Super Mario Galaxy film names, pointing to Universal Pictures’ nameservers, with the upcoming sequel. That led to speculation that the film would be called Super Mario Galaxy.
The report also noted an earlier rumor suggesting Super Mario World and cautioned that the registered domains might have another explanation, including a possible third film. The domain clue was secondary reporting, not an official confirmation or independently established proof of the film’s title.
What Nintendo officially announced
Nintendo resolved the speculation at its September 12, 2025 Direct: Shigeru Miyamoto announced the name The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Nintendo’s same-day announcement with Illumination confirmed the title. The report’s central phrase was right, but the official title includes “The” and “Movie.”

The film is an animated story based on the world of Super Mario Bros. and follows 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Nintendo and Illumination said the first film earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide; that figure refers to the 2023 film, not the sequel or the title report.
How the two pre-announcement claims compare
| Claim | Evidence before the Direct | What Nintendo announced |
|---|---|---|
| Super Mario Galaxy | Domain-registration clue reported by Notebookcheck on September 11, 2025; the report noted uncertainty. | The phrase was borne out in the official title, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. |
| Super Mario World | An earlier rumor mentioned in the same report. | Not the title announced by Nintendo. |
The distinction is between an inference reported before the event and confirmation from Nintendo afterward. The evidence supports saying the Galaxy title was anticipated by a domain clue; it does not support saying the movie’s title had been officially leaked or confirmed in advance.

Release schedule and announced production details
Nintendo and Illumination’s later March 10, 2026 release announcement gave the film’s schedule as April 1, 2026, in the United States and many additional markets; April 24 in Japan; and dates during April in select territories. The September 2025 announcement had initially listed April 3 for the United States and many markets, so the March 2026 notice is the later schedule. These are announced theatrical dates, not confirmation here of current showings or streaming availability.
The companies named Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors, Matthew Fogel as screenwriter, and Brian Tyler as composer. The March 2026 cast announcement listed Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Luis Guzmán, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Brie Larson. Nintendo and Illumination described the sequel as produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto; Universal Pictures distributes it worldwide, and Nintendo and Universal co-financed it.

Galaxy games are related, but they are not the movie
In its Direct recap, Nintendo announced a physical bundle of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Switch, as well as digital availability for both games. It also announced an illustrated hardcover edition of Rosalina’s Storybook, featuring the original art and story from the Super Mario Galaxy game. These are game-related products, not the film itself or prerequisites for watching it.
