The Summer Hikaru Died uses a horror premise to examine a bond shaped by intimacy, grief, and fear. Whether to call it BL depends on how readers interpret that relationship: Yen Press categorizes the manga as horror, mystery, crime, drama, and dark, while BL is a critical framing rather than an official genre label in the publisher’s listing.
What is The Summer Hikaru Died about?
Mokumokuren’s manga follows Yoshiki and Hikaru, childhood friends who grew up in a rural Japanese village. Hikaru goes missing in the mountains and later returns, but Yoshiki realizes that something else has taken his place. The being looks and behaves like Hikaru and carries his memories, yet Yoshiki knows his friend is gone.

That contradiction drives the story’s unease: Yoshiki is confronted with someone familiar enough to invite closeness and strange enough to inspire dread. Netflix described the anime as a blend of slice of life and the supernatural; Yen Press’s Vol. 1 catalog lists the manga under crime, mystery, drama, horror, and dark.
Is The Summer Hikaru Died BL?
There is no single official genre ruling established by the cited sources. Yen Press does not label its Vol. 1 listing BL. The “dark side of BL” reading comes from critical discussion of the complicated relationship between Yoshiki and the being in Hikaru’s form, and of how intimacy and desire meet grief and horror in the story.

That distinction matters: a publisher’s catalog labels describe how it markets a volume, while a critical reading interprets the relationship and themes. Readers may find queer or BL resonances in the emotional bond without treating BL as the publisher’s stated genre classification.
Why does the story’s intimacy feel frightening?
The horror begins with a familiar face and a devastating absence. Yoshiki is not simply trying to identify a monster; he is negotiating his attachment to a presence that resembles someone he loves and remembers. Recognition, longing, and fear therefore occupy the same relationship rather than neatly separating into romance on one side and horror on the other.

This tension is what makes the BL framing useful as a question, not a definitive label. It asks readers to consider how the closeness between the characters is represented while keeping the story’s central uncertainty in view: the returned figure may share Hikaru’s appearance and memories, but Yoshiki understands that Hikaru himself is gone.
Is it a horror manga?
Yes, horror is among the genres listed on Yen Press’s official Vol. 1 page, alongside mystery, crime, drama, and dark. Netflix’s description of the anime as slice of life mixed with the supernatural points to a tonal blend rather than a replacement for the horror element.

Where can you read or watch it?
Read the manga
Yen Press’s English-language paperback edition of Volume 1 lists Mokumokuren as author, Ajani Oloye as translator, and Abigail Blackman as letterer. It is rated Teen, runs 180 pages, carries ISBN 9781975360559, and was released July 18, 2023. Yen Press lists Amazon among the retailers; check the publisher’s Volume 1 page for its current retailer links. The publisher’s series page displays volumes 1–8 and a manga serial; that listing alone does not establish whether publication is complete or ongoing.
Watch the anime
Netflix announced on June 2, 2025 that the anime would premiere on its service on July 5, 2025. The announcement names CygamesPictures as the animation studio, Ryohei Takeshita as director and series composer, Chiaki Kobayashi as Yoshiki, and Shuichiro Umeda as Hikaru. A launch announcement does not confirm present availability in every country, so check Netflix’s catalog in your region.

In the announcement, Kobayashi described the role this way: “I’m thrilled to voice Yoshiki. From the audition, I felt a whirlwind of emotions — fear, comfort, and uncertainty. My goal was to capture all of Yoshiki’s feelings and melancholy.”
