The Studio stars Seth Rogen as Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of fictional Continental Studios. Its central characters draw on Hollywood experience, remembered industry moments and creative influences—but the available accounts do not identify a real executive as the direct model for each lead character.
Who is in the main cast of The Studio?
Apple describes The Studio as a comedy released March 26, 2025. Its story follows Matt Remick and the team at embattled fictional movie studio Continental Studios as they navigate artists, corporate leaders and the commercial demands of filmmaking. Apple and the Television Academy identify these five principal cast members and roles:
| Actor | Character | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Seth Rogen | Matt Remick | Newly appointed head of Continental Studios; the central character’s conflict echoes a remark by an unnamed executive. |
| Catherine O’Hara | Patty Leigh | Identified as a principal cast member and O’Hara’s character. The sources here do not establish a specific real-person inspiration for Patty. |
| Kathryn Hahn | Maya Mason | A marketing executive whose stated priority is making money rather than pursuing artistic ambitions. Hahn does not name a real-life model. |
| Ike Barinholtz | Sal Saperstein | A senior vice president who loses the top job to his friend Matt. Barinholtz describes Sal as someone who enjoys the parties and social access and would rather keep his job and have fun than live Matt’s life. |
| Chase Sui Wonders | Quinn Hackett | A newly promoted development executive. Wonders calls her a “mini-Matt”: ambitious, respectful of Matt and Machiavellian. |
Apple’s series announcement establishes the premise, release date and cast; the Television Academy’s January 30, 2026 feature supplies the role mapping and actor commentary. The Associated Press also confirms the principal ensemble.
Is Matt Remick based on a real Hollywood executive?
No named executive is identified as Matt’s direct model. The clearest documented real-world seed is an anecdote co-creator Evan Goldberg recalled from a notes session, when he and Rogen were young writers seeking work. Goldberg said an executive described entering the business because he loved movies, then feared his job had become ruining them. The Television Academy says Matt echoes that sentiment in the first episode.

“I got into this because I love movies — but now I have this fear that my job is to ruin them.”
That recollection supports a connection between Matt’s predicament and an industry experience; it does not establish the executive’s identity or make Matt a portrait of that person. Rogen also described the creators’ approach as drawing on personal experience and a love of film. He said the idea took shape in 2022, while he was filming The Fabelmans and rewatching The Larry Sanders Show, as he and Goldberg discussed a studio-head character for him.

What inspired the other main characters?
The actor comments describe the characters’ personalities and roles, not named real-life counterparts. Hahn presents Maya as a marketing executive focused on making money, while Barinholtz emphasizes Sal’s enjoyment of the social side of the job and his preference for keeping his position over taking on Matt’s burdens. Wonders describes Quinn’s ambition and her resemblance to Matt.
“She’s a mini-Matt.”
Wonders’ phrase captures a character dynamic: Quinn respects Matt and shares some of his ambition, while bringing her own Machiavellian streak. It is not evidence that she represents a specific executive. Likewise, the sources do not establish a particular real-person inspiration for Patty Leigh.

What other works and people influenced the series?
The Larry Sanders Show informed the creators’ thinking
Rogen named The Larry Sanders Show as a point of reference during the show’s development. That is a cited creative influence, distinct from claiming that any The Studio character is based on a character or person from that series.
Bryan Cranston’s guest role has a specific, separate inspiration
Bryan Cranston’s CEO character Griffin Mill shares a name with the studio executive in Robert Altman’s film The Player. Cranston said he intended his performance as a parody of former Paramount studio chief Robert Evans. This is a documented influence for Cranston’s guest character, not evidence that the five principal characters map to named executives.

Some guest performers appear as exaggerated versions of themselves
The Television Academy feature discusses cameos by performers including Sarah Polley, Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Mackie and Ron Howard. It reports that scripts were tailored to performers who agreed to appear, and that some declined to play themselves in the proposed manner. Those accounts concern guest appearances; they are not a complete episode-by-episode guest-cast guide.
