Spoilers: This manga-inclusive ranking includes material beyond the 48-episode anime, including Garm and later-arc events. Anime-only viewers can stop at Snake; the lower entries include manga spoilers. There is no official numerical power scale, so the order below is an interpretation of combat effectiveness at each character’s peak, weighing fight outcomes, opponent quality, testimony, and fighting style. A recent secondary ranking puts Thors first, followed by Thorkell, peak-era Thorfinn, Garm, and Snake; the order is a useful argument, not settled canon. CBR’s ranking supplies the placements and combat accounts, while official anime profiles provide character descriptions.
How this ranking measures strength
Vinland Saga does not provide an official score that settles who is strongest. This ranking treats strength as peak combat effectiveness, rather than moral worth, leadership, or who would win every possible matchup. It considers what characters accomplish in fights, whom they face, what circumstances shape the result, and whether the story or another character offers testimony about their ability. The order follows the secondary ranking’s interpretation, with the limits of each comparison made explicit.

- Fight outcomes: A win, loss, escape, or surrender matters, but the objective and conditions of the fight matter too.
- Opponent and circumstances: Injury, weapons, surprise, and unequal objectives can change what a result demonstrates.
- Peak versus present-day form: Thorfinn’s peak as a fighter is different from the later character who rejects violence.
- Style and matchup: Thorkell’s force, Thorfinn’s speed and daggers, Askeladd’s swordplay and tactics, and Snake’s technique are different kinds of strengths.
- Adaptation scope: The anime and manga do not give viewers the same candidate pool; Garm is manga-only in the ranking used here.
The strongest Vinland Saga characters
1. Thors
Thors takes the top spot. The official profile describes him as a former Jomsviking commander, known as the Troll of Jom, who left the battlefield after starting a family. The secondary ranking says Thors defeated Askeladd in their duel and reports that Thorkell had once been knocked unconscious by him; it also relays Thorkell’s assessment that Thors was the one man stronger than he was. Those reported feats and testimony make a strong case for Thors at his peak, though they do not establish an official ranking. His surrender to protect a hostage also shows why a fight’s objective matters: he gave up his life rather than pursue victory at any cost.
2. Thorkell
Thorkell is the list’s most imposing active warrior: the official profile emphasizes his huge build, extraordinary strength, appetite for challenging opponents, and fearsome reputation. The secondary ranking places him second on the basis of his strength and battle record, while Thorkell’s reported regard for Thors supports the first-place choice above. Thorkell’s ranking reflects more than size, but his direct, overwhelming style is the clearest contrast to fighters who rely on speed or technique.

3. Thorfinn at his peak
This is teenage Thorfinn as a combatant, not a claim that violence defines the person he becomes later. The official profile describes the young fighter as small, agile, and skilled with daggers. The secondary ranking cites his two duels with Thorkell and says Thorkell acknowledged Thorfinn’s win in their second duel. That is an exceptional showing against a top opponent and supports third place. A peak-fighter list can rank Thorfinn highly even as the later Thorfinn refuses to fight.
4. Garm
Manga spoiler: Garm does not appear in the 48 anime episodes covered by the cited ranking. The secondary source says he trades blows with Thorkell and fights Thorfinn using a custom spear. Those encounters put him among the manga’s strongest fighters, but his inclusion makes this a manga-inclusive ranking rather than an anime-only list.
Rank #2
5. Snake
Snake leads the farm’s bodyguards, and the official profile identifies him as a skilled swordsman. The secondary ranking places him fifth and characterizes him as technically accomplished. That is an assessment of his demonstrated skill, not an official statement that he outranks every other character in all circumstances. His swordsmanship earns him a place among the strongest, even though his combat style is less about spectacular force than Thorkell’s.
6. Thorgil
Thorgil is Ketil’s eldest son and a former guard of Canute; the official profile describes him as possessing strong combat ability. The secondary ranking places him sixth and points to his attempted attack on Canute, which Wulf intervenes to stop. That episode demonstrates Thorgil’s aggression and capability, but it also makes clear that the outcome cannot be treated as a simple one-on-one win.
Rank #3
7. Askeladd
Askeladd leads a hundred Vikings and is described in the official profile as both a schemer and a top swordsman. The secondary ranking puts him seventh, balancing his sword skill and repeated duels with Thorfinn against the more striking physical showings of those ranked above him. His position illustrates why strength is not just raw power: tactical judgment and skill matter, even when the ranking favors characters with greater physical feats.
8–10. Bjorn, Gardar, and Wulf
The secondary ranking rounds out its ten with these three, but their placement is less firmly supported by the official profiles reviewed, and their order is especially subjective.
Rank #4
- Bjorn: The ranking cites his berserker state as the key context for his combat ability.
- Gardar: His violence while gravely injured makes his showing memorable, but the injury is part of the context, not a reason to treat it as a directly comparable contest.
- Wulf: His intervention against Thorgil is the cited basis for including him, though it is not equivalent to a settled head-to-head ranking.
What changes in an anime-only ranking?
Garm is the clearest dividing line: he is manga-only in the ranking used here, so an anime-only viewer should leave him out rather than assume the adaptation has introduced him. The other major scope issue is Thorfinn: placing him third refers to the teenage fighter at his peak, not the later character’s current choices. Any anime-only list should also avoid relying on manga events that have not appeared in the viewer’s adaptation. The official profiles help identify characters, but the ordering and detailed combat interpretations here come from a secondary editorial ranking, not an official power scale.
