Flappy Bird began as a small game by Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen in April 2013. It took about eight months to reach the top of major App Store charts; in February 2014, at the height of its popularity, Nguyen withdrew it. The game’s disappearance was not a Nintendo takedown, and later releases under the Flappy Bird name belong to a separate chapter.
How Flappy Bird began
Nguyen created Flappy Bird during a weekend break from his day job building navigation software for taxis, according to Guinness World Records. It was not an overnight success. Around eight months after its April 2013 creation, it rose to the top of Apple App Store charts in the United States, United Kingdom and China.
In a Rolling Stone interview quoted by CBS News, Nguyen explained his original intent: “I was just making something fun to share with other people.” He added, “I couldn’t predict the success of Flappy Bird.”
Why a one-tap game became so compelling
The basic rule was immediately clear: tap to make a bird rise, guide it through gaps between vertical pipes, and avoid collisions. A collision ended the run. There was little to learn before playing, but getting through successive gaps demanded precise timing. That contrast—an easy-to-understand action paired with a difficult challenge—helps explain why players could quickly try again, though it is an interpretation of the game design, not a measured finding about player behavior.

How big was Flappy Bird at its peak?
By February 2014, the game had more than 50 million downloads in at least 100 countries, CBS News reported, citing a Rolling Stone profile. CBS also reported that it was earning about $50,000 a day at its peak. That figure is a contemporary reported estimate, not an audited financial statement or a guaranteed daily amount.
Why did Flappy Bird disappear?
Nguyen announced that he would take the game down on February 9, 2014; Guinness World Records dates its removal from the stores to February 10. In the days around the withdrawal, reports connected his decision to feeling overwhelmed by the attention and concern about the game’s effects.

Nintendo did not force the game offline. The company said it had not contacted Nguyen or sought Flappy Bird’s removal, as reported by TIME and The Guardian. The claim that Nintendo caused the removal is a rumor, not the explanation supported by those reports.
What happened after the removal?
In March 2014, Nguyen said Flappy Bird would return “but not soon,” according to The Guardian. That statement described his plan at the time; it does not establish that later games using the brand were his original release.

The later rights history is a separate account. The Flappy Bird Foundation says Mobile Media Partners obtained the US trademark registration in 2018, Gametech Holdings acquired it in 2021, and the Foundation acquired it in August 2024. This history is the Foundation’s own description of the trademark succession, not independent confirmation of every step.
Current terms effective August 17, 2026 describe a browser game service at flappybird.io. The terms identify Flappy Bird LLC as owner or licensee of the service’s intellectual property and say third-party advertising makes the service free. These details describe the current service, not Nguyen’s 2013 app; the cited material does not establish that he endorsed the revival.
