Bonnie and Clyde’s so-called “death car” was a Ford sedan—the vehicle they were riding in when officers ambushed and killed them near Sailes, Louisiana, on May 23, 1934. The FBI’s historical image caption identifies it as a bullet-ridden Ford sedan; PBS’s American Experience transcript calls it a Ford V-8. The car is part of the account of their deaths, but also of a wider crime spree in which the Barrow gang relied on stolen automobiles.
What happened to Bonnie and Clyde in the car?
Before dawn on May 23, 1934, officers from Louisiana and Texas concealed themselves along a highway near Sailes in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. When Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow appeared in a car and tried to drive away, the officers opened fire. The FBI says they were killed instantly. PBS’s American Experience places the ambush on Highway 154 and describes the Ford V-8 slowing near Ivy Methvin’s staged roadside breakdown before the shooting.
The FBI’s account identifies the ambush vehicle in a photograph caption as a bullet-ridden Ford sedan. PBS calls it a Ford V-8. Those descriptions are well supported; the sources cited here do not establish an exact body style, trim, or model designation, so more specific labels should be treated cautiously.
How badly was the Ford damaged?
PBS’s documentary narration says more than 150 bullets struck the car. That is the figure reported in the program, not a separately verified count or the result of a named statistical study.

A recollection of the ambush
In the PBS documentary, retired deputy sheriff L.J. “Boots” Hinton recalls: “If Clyde had come down through there driving the way he normally did at seventy to ninety mile a hour, they’d have had a skeet shoot.” It is Hinton’s later recollection as presented in the program, rather than a contemporaneous record from 1934.
Why the car mattered beyond the ambush
The Ford is remembered because it carried the couple during the ambush, but the automobile was also central to the Barrow gang’s movements. The FBI says its investigation began with evidence connected to stolen Ford automobiles and that Bonnie and Clyde traveled in a series of stolen cars. Their story is therefore not simply about one vehicle: the car belongs to the record of a violent crime spree, not just its final scene.

What happened to the car after the shooting?
After the ambush, the Ford was towed to the former Conger’s Furniture Store and Funeral Parlor in Arcadia, Louisiana, where Bonnie and Clyde were embalmed, according to the state’s tourism site. That is a separate location from the Highway 154 ambush markers near Gibsland and from the Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum, which is in a former café where the couple had stopped before the ambush.
Where is the original car now?
The car has been exhibited under the “death car” name, but its display history has shifted among venues in Primm, Nevada. A 1993 Nevada State Library and Archives periodical described it on display at Whiskey Pete’s and noted that a copy of Clyde Barrow’s letter to Henry Ford was shown with it. Later Las Vegas Review-Journal reporting described moves among Primm venues and placed the car at Buffalo Bill’s in 2024.

Those older reports do not establish where the original car is located or whether it is open to visitors in October 2026. Confirm the venue and access directly before making a trip. The sources also do not establish that the original car is housed at the Gibsland museum; Louisiana’s tourism page describes the museum and the markers as visitor sites but does not say the museum contains the original Ford.

Louisiana’s official tourism site describes two distinct sites near Gibsland: roadside interpretive markers on LA Highway 154, about eight miles south of town, and the Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum in a former café where the couple stopped before the ambush. The markers provide roadside interpretation at the area associated with the shooting; the museum offers exhibits. Neither should be confused with the Arcadia location where the car was towed afterward.
