Glen Powell adopted Brisket while filming Twisters in Enid, Oklahoma—not as part of a publicity plan, but after seeing a rescue puppy’s photograph on Instagram during a breakup. He flew to Los Angeles, collected the roughly 101⁄2-week-old puppy from The Labelle Foundation, renamed him Brisket, and brought him back to the production.

What began as an impulsive decision to become a “dog dad” turned into one of the film’s most memorable off-camera stories. Brisket was crate-trained between Powell’s filming commitments, became a shared mascot for the cast and crew, appeared at the Los Angeles premiere, and later developed a celebrity profile of his own.

How Glen Powell found Brisket

Powell was working in Enid, Oklahoma, during production of Twisters, the 2024 disaster film directed by Lee Isaac Chung. He had wanted a dog for some time, but the timing of the adoption was also tied to a breakup and a growing feeling that he was ready to become a “dog dad.”

While browsing dog-adoption and rescue accounts on Instagram, Powell came across a photograph of a puppy at The Labelle Foundation. He later told Entertainment Weekly that he sent the rescue an emotional video explaining why he should be allowed to adopt the dog. He then took time away from filming, flew from Oklahoma to Los Angeles, picked up the puppy, and returned to the Twisters set.

The decision was spontaneous, but it was not a case of finding a dog through a film studio or casting process. Brisket was a rescue puppy whose picture happened to reach Powell at a moment when he was already thinking about adopting.

Brisket was originally called Ambrosia

According to reporting that quoted The Labelle Foundation’s operations chief, the puppy was approximately 101⁄2 weeks old when the adoption process began. He had originally been named Ambrosia. Powell changed the name to Brisket after bringing him home.

The rescue said Brisket had arrived with his mother and five littermates, and that all of the puppies and their mother were subsequently placed. Reports put the adoption fee at $700, including microchipping and spay/neuter services. That figure belongs to this particular adoption account; it should not be treated as a standard fee or a description of every shelter’s practices.

Public coverage generally describes Brisket as a terrier-poodle mix. That is a reported description, not a verified kennel classification or publicly documented genetic-test result. His identity as a rescue puppy is better established than any precise breed label.

Why Powell named him Brisket

The name connects Brisket to Powell’s Texas background and his association with Austin barbecue culture. Brisket is, of course, the smoked-meat dish closely associated with Texas barbecue, making the name a nod to Powell’s roots.

Powell also considered naming the dog “Enid,” after the Oklahoma city where he was filming and where he decided he wanted to become a dog owner. He ultimately chose Brisket, linking the puppy more directly to his Texas identity than to the location of the film shoot.

When Powell introduced Brisket on Instagram in July 2023, he described him as “1.5 pounds of raw power.” The puppy’s name and tiny size quickly gave the adoption story a distinctive personality, even before Brisket became associated with the film’s publicity campaign.

How a puppy handled a movie set

Adopting a young puppy in the middle of a demanding production created obvious practical problems. Powell said he spent nights crate-training Brisket while continuing to work during the day. The arrangement required a routine that could fit around filming rather than a conventional home schedule.

Powell’s account was that Brisket was surprisingly calm during the workday. He would sit in Powell’s chair, sleep, and interact with people from different production departments. Director Lee Isaac Chung initially wondered whether getting a puppy during the shoot was a wise decision, but the cast and crew soon embraced him.

Brisket became an informal mascot of the production. Powell said people from nearly every department wanted to spend time with him, and crew members would ask to borrow him during the workday. That does not mean the puppy was formally employed by the film, but it does explain why he became so closely associated with the set.

Brisket’s connection to Twisters

Powell began sharing Brisket in social-media posts connected with the film. In July 2024, he posted photographs of the dog with members of the Twisters cast. Coverage jokingly referred to Brisket as “the Lassie of his generation,” a playful description of his visibility rather than an official role in the production.

Powell also told Us Weekly that Brisket would be the first personal item he saved in a tornado. The comment was a humorous promotional-interview answer, but it captured how central the dog had become in Powell’s public image by the time the movie reached theaters.

Brisket appeared at the Los Angeles premiere on July 11, 2024, alongside Powell, wearing a bow tie. He was also featured with Powell in a special Entertainment Weekly package tied to the film’s U.S. theatrical release on July 19, 2024.

Brisket’s premiere look: A dog bow tie is a purely optional accessory for a formal occasion. It should never be tightened in a way that interferes with breathing, swallowing, movement, or the dog’s ability to relax.

The shirtless-photo viral moment

Brisket’s biggest burst of online attention came in July 2024, when Powell posted a series of photographs that included shirtless images of himself holding the dog. Entertainment coverage described the combination as a viral “thirst trap,” but Brisket was not merely incidental to the joke: he appeared in multiple photographs tied to the Twisters set and quickly became the image’s most talked-about companion.

What Vogue’s “Dogue” feature revealed

In an August 2024 Vogue “Dogue” feature, Brisket was presented as Powell’s celebrity companion rather than simply as a promotional prop. Powell described the dog’s defining quality as his ability to cuddle and mentioned several nicknames, including “Brisky Business.”

The feature also included a more self-critical detail. Powell acknowledged that taking Brisket on a publicity tour exposed a young dog to loud pyrotechnics, vehicles, and other chaotic surroundings. He said he felt like a bad dog dad because he had not anticipated how stressful those settings could be.

That admission matters because a dog appearing relaxed in photographs is not proof that a busy premiere or publicity event is comfortable for the animal. Brisket’s public appearances were part of his celebrity story, but they also illustrate the need to assess noise, crowds, transport, unfamiliar spaces, and escape risks from the dog’s perspective.

What is known—and what is not

Reported fact What to avoid overstating
Powell adopted Brisket during Twisters filming after seeing him through Instagram rescue content. Do not describe the adoption as a studio-arranged publicity stunt without evidence.
The Labelle Foundation handled the adoption, and the puppy was reportedly called Ambrosia before Powell renamed him. Do not assume the reported $700 fee represents all rescue organizations.
Brisket was approximately 101⁄2 weeks old when the process began, according to the rescue account. Do not turn that estimate into a verified birth date.
He is commonly described in entertainment coverage as a terrier-poodle mix. Do not present that description as a formal breed certification or genetic result.
He was crate-trained during production and became a set mascot. Do not claim a particular crate, training method, or professional trainer was involved.
He attended the Los Angeles premiere and appeared in film-related publicity. Do not infer that every public appearance was stress-free or appropriate for every dog.

Why Brisket’s story resonated

Brisket’s appeal comes from the unusual overlap of four stories. First, there is the rescue adoption: a puppy found through an Instagram photograph rather than through a conventional celebrity-pet pipeline. Second, there is the demanding setting—a film production in Oklahoma, where Powell had to balance crate training with long workdays. Third, the name ties the dog to Powell’s Texas background while preserving the Enid detail as part of the origin story. Finally, there is the modern celebrity-internet cycle, in which a puppy at a movie premiere can become a viral personality in his own right.

The story is also more interesting because Powell has acknowledged its imperfect parts. The adoption was emotionally driven, the logistics were difficult, and the publicity tour exposed the young dog to environments Powell later recognized could be overwhelming. That combination makes Brisket more than a cute promotional accessory: he is the rescue puppy whose arrival changed the atmosphere around a major film and whose public profile grew faster than anyone could have planned.

If Brisket inspires you to adopt

Brisket’s story should not be read as a recommendation to make a rushed adoption during a major life disruption. A rescue puppy needs time, supervision, veterinary care, identification, socialization, and a realistic plan for workdays and travel.

  • Confirm that your schedule allows for toilet breaks, exercise, feeding, training, and rest.
  • Use a crate as a safe management space, never as punishment or indefinite confinement.
  • Ask the rescue about medical records, vaccination status, microchipping, sterilization arrangements, temperament, and known needs.
  • Fit a secure collar and identification tag, while also keeping the microchip registration current.
  • Introduce crowds, vehicles, loud sounds, and unfamiliar environments gradually rather than assuming a young dog will enjoy them.
  • Watch the dog’s body language and provide an exit or quiet space if an event becomes overwhelming.
