The orange 1994 Toyota Supra MK IV in The Fast and the Furious belonged to Brian O’Conner on screen, but the primary hero car began as the personal Supra of Craig Lieberman. Toyota’s interview with Lieberman describes how the production found his car and brought him in to advise on its tuner-car details. The film’s vivid paint and graphics, along with the Supra Turbo’s tuning reputation, helped make it one of the franchise’s most recognizable cars.
What car did Brian drive in the first Fast & Furious?
Brian O’Conner, played by Paul Walker, drove a 1994 fourth-generation Toyota Supra MK IV, chassis designation JZA80, in the 2001 film The Fast and the Furious. Toyota Australia describes the movie car as powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo inline-six 2JZ-GTE. The orange body and distinctive graphics became as central to its screen identity as the model itself.
How Craig Lieberman’s Supra reached the production
Toyota USA Newsroom’s 2021 interview identifies Craig Lieberman as the original owner of the primary hero vehicle. In the interview, Lieberman recalls that in December 2000, someone approached him at a car show about a film then called Red Line and asked him to bring his yellow Supra to Universal. He says the production later sought his help finding tuner cars and advising on builds, decals, and automotive dialogue.
That account explains how Lieberman’s car and expertise became part of the film. It does not establish that every Supra used in filming was his: a production can use separate vehicles for hero shots, interiors, and stunts, and the available accounts do not identify every car used.

Why the Supra fit the film
Toyota’s model history links the fourth-generation Supra Turbo’s tuner following to its 2JZ engine. Toyota says highly modified Supra builds helped inspire the car featured in the 2001 film. That made the model a natural fit for a story centered on street racing and car culture: its appeal was not limited to a fast-looking shape, but included an established reputation among tuners.
The film’s visual treatment gave the car an identity audiences could recognize immediately. Toyota Australia describes its finish as Lamborghini Diablo Candy Orange pearl, with “Nuclear Gladiator” graphics by Troy Lee Designs. Those details became a reference point for fans recreating the movie’s look, though a replica should not be assumed to share the film car’s exact parts or configuration.

The hero car, other production cars, and the auction reports
It is important to distinguish the primary hero Supra from other cars used in production and from vehicles later described as film cars. Motor Authority reported that a 1994 Supra sold in 2021 had been used for interior and exterior shots, then repurposed as Slap Jack’s Supra in 2 Fast 2 Furious. Its factory 2JZ-GTE was paired with a four-speed automatic, even though the car is shown with a manual transmission on screen. A movie car’s real-world specification, therefore, may differ from its fictional presentation.
Accounts of the 2021 auction also use different price conventions:

Toyota’s 2019 model-history article also reported that a “Fast and Furious” movie Supra sold for $185,000 in 2015. That earlier report is useful context, but it does not by itself establish that the 2015 and 2021 sales involved the same physical car.

The Supra’s staying power comes from the combination of a recognizable film design and an existing tuner following. Toyota’s accounts connect the 2JZ-powered Supra Turbo’s popularity with tuners to the heavily modified car audiences saw in the original film; Toyota Australia also notes that fans later sought to reproduce its appearance. The result is a car remembered not simply as a prop, but as a meeting point between the movie’s fictional street-racing world and real-world car culture.
