The “happy Chico / serious Chico” meme comes from the cover of Chico Buarque de Hollanda, the Brazilian singer-songwriter’s 1966 debut album. Chico Buarque wanted a serious portrait; his record label preferred him smiling. The final cover showed both expressions side by side—and later became a ready-made visual joke.
Why are there two versions of Chico on the album cover?
The cover for Chico Buarque de Hollanda pairs two portraits: one with Buarque smiling and one with a serious expression. In a 2020 interview for Sesc Pinheiros’ Muito Prazer, Meu Primeiro Disco, Buarque recalled that he wanted to look like a serious composer, while the label thought he looked better when he smiled. He posed both ways; the finished cover combined the two. Buarque said he only saw the completed design after the label had made its decision. Correio Braziliense reported his account.

Looking back, Buarque called the result an “absurd” cover that became a meme. He also said that even when he sees it outside the context of memes, he thinks, “what an absurd thing.” The Portuguese remarks were reported in Correio Braziliense’s 2022 story; the original quotations are in Portuguese.
What album is the meme from?
It is the cover of Chico Buarque de Hollanda, released by Brazilian label RGE in 1966 as Buarque’s debut album. The Discografia Brasileira entry lists the original LP as well as CD editions released in 1995 and 1997. Buarque’s official site also lists the album in his discography: Chico Buarque de Hollanda.

How did the cover become a meme?
The image’s later joke depends on its built-in contrast: one Chico looks pleased, while the other looks serious or unhappy. Meme makers place different outcomes, moods, or situations under the two portraits—often contrasting the hoped-for version with a disappointing reality. The format is also known in Portuguese as “Chico feliz e Chico sério” and “Chico Bipolar”; English-language references commonly call it the Chico Buarque album-cover meme. “Chico Bipolar” is a meme nickname, not a clinical description.
The cover existed decades before its meme use. Know Your Meme identifies a September 10, 2006 post of the album image on the Discos do Brasil website as an early online appearance. It dates image-macro use on Facebook to around April 2014 and reports that the meme gained popularity that June. Those are dated milestones, not proof of the first meme post. CNN Brasil likewise recounts the cover’s path into meme culture.

When did the meme start?
The exact first meme post—and the identity of any first creator—has not been established. The available record supports a careful timeline, not a definitive origin claim:
- 1966: RGE releases Chico Buarque de Hollanda with the two-portrait cover.
- September 10, 2006: An early documented online appearance of the album image is posted on the Discos do Brasil website, according to Know Your Meme.
- Around April 2014: Know Your Meme dates image-macro use on Facebook to this period and reports wider popularity in June.
- 2017: Buarque uses the visual himself to announce his official Instagram account, reversing the portraits and adding “Não tinha Instagram oficial / Agora tenho” (“I didn’t have an official Instagram / Now I do”), as documented by Know Your Meme.
- November 2022: A fan account’s post sharing Buarque’s explanation helped bring the cover story back to social media, according to Correio Braziliense.
The 2022 attention was a renewed interest in the anecdote behind the cover, not the beginning of the meme format.
