What Henry Fambrough meant by “This was our time”
Fambrough’s statement was issued by the group’s representative on May 3, 2023, after the induction announcement. He said: “This was our time and we are so very grateful.” He also reflected on how far the group had come: “This has been a lifelong dream, I never imagined back in Ferndale, when we all started in 1954, that we’d be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”
“Our time” was a response to a long-awaited honor, not a line from a later ceremony speech. Fambrough also wished that his original groupmates could have been there to celebrate with him. The Hall’s account of the group’s history describes their path from local beginnings to enduring recordings that helped define their place in popular music. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction essay
How The Spinners reached the Hall
Teenage beginnings near Detroit
The group formed in 1954 in Ferndale, Michigan, near Detroit. Founding members Pervis Jackson, Billy Henderson, Bobbie Smith and Henry Fambrough began singing together as teenagers. Their early recording career included “That’s What Girls Are Made For,” written by Harvey Fuqua and Gwen Gordy; the Hall’s essay notes that a young Marvin Gaye played drums on the recording.

From Motown to Atlantic
After a period with Motown, The Spinners signed to Atlantic Records in 1972. Philippé Wynne joined the lineup, and the group began working with producer and arranger Thom Bell, songwriters and Philadelphia Sound musicians. That partnership gave their records a polished, richly arranged identity built around the contrast and blend of the singers’ voices.
The Hall essay says the Atlantic album Spinners produced “I’ll Be Around,” which reached No. 1 on the R&B chart and No. 3 on the pop chart and sold a million copies. “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” and “One of a Kind (Love Affair)” followed. The essay also credits “Then Came You,” recorded with Dionne Warwick, as the first No. 1 pop single for both Warwick and The Spinners. These chart and sales figures are the Hall essay’s historical account. Read the Hall’s induction essay

The Spinners are often associated with romantic singles, but their catalog also addressed everyday pressures and community life. The Hall essay highlights several recordings that reveal the breadth of their material:
- “I’ll Be Around” — A signature Atlantic-era single that pairs a memorable hook with the group’s layered vocal sound.
- “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love” and “One of a Kind (Love Affair)” — Follow-up hits from the Thom Bell period.
- “Ghetto Child” — A song addressing urban life.
- “Living a Little, Laughing a Little” — A reflection on resilience.
- “Sadie” — A tribute to Black mothers.
- “Games People Play” and “The Rubberband Man” — Later examples of the group’s distinctive sound and showmanship.
- “Then Came You” — Their collaboration with Dionne Warwick, which the Hall essay identifies as a landmark chart achievement for both acts.

Why the recognition mattered
The induction recognized a career that crossed musical eras and record labels: from a teenage vocal group formed near Detroit, through Motown, to Atlantic recordings shaped by Thom Bell and Philadelphia musicians. Fambrough’s “This was our time” put the personal meaning of that recognition in a few words: a dream imagined in Ferndale had become a place in the Hall, even as he remembered the original members who could not share the moment with him.
