The film strongly implies that Nicholas dies by suicide: after he returns home from inpatient treatment and briefly reconnects with his parents, an off-screen gunshot is heard and Peter and Kate react in terror. The final image is best read as Peter imagining the ordinary family moment he wishes they could have had, not as proof that Nicholas survived.
What happens at the end of The Son?
Nicholas comes home after inpatient treatment. For a brief moment, the family appears to be reconnecting. Then a gunshot sounds off-screen. Peter and Kate’s immediate, horrified reaction makes the implication clear: Nicholas has died by suicide. The film does not show the act.

The scene follows a story in which Peter tries to help his troubled teenage son while also managing his new relationship with Beth, their infant, and a career opportunity. Kate is Nicholas’s mother and Peter’s ex-wife. The film’s official synopsis describes Nicholas as having missed school for months and being deeply troubled, while Peter struggles to reach him. Sony Pictures India’s synopsis and credits and Sony Pictures Classics’ film page frame the story around those family pressures.
Why is the gunshot so shocking?
The tragedy is foreshadowed, including by the gun’s earlier presence, but Florian Zeller said he deliberately kept the actors unprepared for the sound in the final scene. In an interview with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the director and co-writer recalled telling Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern the scene would be a camera rehearsal and that they should not expect anything to happen at the end. He said their surprise and terror were real, and that they instinctively stood and ran out of frame. Zeller and Christopher Hampton discussed the film’s staging and adaptation with the Academy.

- Peter (Hugh Jackman) finds his life in chaos when his ex-wife (Laura Dern) tells him their teenage son (Zen McGrath) is going through emotional turmoil. Peter looks at his past relationship with his father (Anthony Hopkins) to find answers, but the more he learns, the more questions he has in this compelling family drama from director Florian Zeller (The Father).
That choice creates a contrast: the film has prepared the audience for tragedy, yet the sudden timing can still break through the expectation that the scene will continue as a reunion. Zeller described the story as one in which viewers sense they are watching a tragedy. He also pointed to the gun introduced earlier, invoking the Chekhov’s-gun idea that a gun introduced in the first act must go off in the third.
Is the final family image real?
The closing family image is most plausibly understood as an imagined alternative: Peter picturing the ordinary shared life he wanted to protect. It does not clearly undo the gunshot or establish that Nicholas recovered. The film leaves room for interpretation, but the tragic reading is supported by the sequence itself; the imagined-image reading is an interpretation of how the ending is structured, not an explanation Zeller explicitly confirmed in the Academy interview.

What does the ending mean for Peter and the family?
Peter’s effort to be a better father is bound up with his own experience of fatherhood: Sony’s synopsis says he wants to care for Nicholas as he would have wanted his own father to care for him. That history helps explain Peter’s urgency, but it does not make his intentions a solution to Nicholas’s distress.
The film presents a crisis within a complicated family, not a simple equation in which divorce, one parent, or one decision alone explains the outcome. Its official descriptions identify Nicholas’s distress and school absence alongside self-harm, family disconnection, and the adults’ competing responsibilities. The ending is devastating partly because Peter’s desire to repair the past cannot substitute for understanding what Nicholas is experiencing in the present.
