Rick Sanchez (Rick C-137) is the strongest answer to “Who is the smartest character in Rick and Morty?” if intelligence means scientific invention and problem-solving. Evil Morty and Rick Prime are serious rivals when the measure is long-range strategy or technological competition. But the series has no official top-ten ranking or shared IQ scale, so this list is an editorial comparison—not canon.
To avoid treating different strengths as interchangeable, the ranking considers invention, strategic planning, adaptation under pressure, and demonstrated outcomes. The first three are the best-supported contenders in the available episode references; the remaining seven are provisional placements, not a definitive series-wide verdict.
How this ranking measures intelligence
In Rick and Morty, intelligence takes several forms. Rick’s scientific invention is not the same skill as Evil Morty’s strategic planning, President Curtis’s political maneuvering, or Morty’s tactical initiative. A character’s victory or defeat in one collaboration or confrontation cannot, by itself, establish who is smarter overall.
Adult Swim’s episode guide identifies “Rickmurai Jack,” “Unmortricken,” and “The Rickchurian Mortydate” as useful story anchors, but it does not rank the characters or provide intelligence statistics. The order below is therefore a reasoned interpretation of demonstrated abilities, with the evidence limitation made explicit.

The 10 smartest characters in Rick and Morty
1. Rick Sanchez (Rick C-137) — scientific invention and problem-solving
Rick is the leading candidate when “smartest” means inventiveness and technical problem-solving. Adult Swim’s clip page describes him outsmarting a 4D being while evading time prison, and identifies the clip with Season 2, Episode 1. That is a concrete example of his ingenuity, not proof of an uncontested overall ranking. Watch Adult Swim’s Rick clip.
2. Evil Morty — strategic planning
Evil Morty belongs near the top for strategic thinking. “Rickmurai Jack” and “Unmortricken” are key official episode-guide anchors for the multiverse storyline involving the leading contenders. Those episode listings establish where to examine his arc; they do not declare him smarter than either Rick. His placement here reflects the strategic dimension of the comparison, not a canon verdict. See Adult Swim’s episode guide.

3. Rick Prime — technological rivalry and planning
Rick Prime is a top-tier technological rival and a central figure in “Unmortricken.” His place alongside C-137 and Evil Morty is warranted by the story’s rivalry, but the official guide does not say he is smarter than either of them. Comparing their plans and outcomes is useful; declaring an objective winner is not supported by the available episode reference.
4. President Curtis — political and tactical problem-solving
President Curtis earns a place as a different kind of contender: political and tactical intelligence. Adult Swim describes “The Rickchurian Mortydate” as a story in which Rick goes toe to toe with the President. That supports including him in a broad comparison of problem-solvers, but does not establish a precise top-ten rank.

- MORTY PLUSH This plush features Evil Morty Smith in his signature blue and yellow outfit, complete with an eye patch and mischievous expression
- ULTRASOFT Crafted from premium, soft, and durable materials, Morty captures the adventurous spirit of the multiverse and is perfect for your interdimensional evil escapades

5. Morty Smith — tactical initiative
Morty’s strongest supported case here is tactical initiative, not scientific invention. Adult Swim’s “Morty defeats Evil Rick” clip describes Morty leading an uprising of alternate-reality Morties. That demonstrates leadership in a specific conflict; it does not show that Morty outranks every Rick in intelligence.
6. Other contenders are not responsibly rankable from the cited episodes
The official episode references available for this comparison do not substantiate five more characters with episode-specific feats. Naming and ordering them would make the list look more certain than the evidence allows. A complete, definitive ten-character ranking requires checking additional primary episode material and identifying a concrete feat for each proposed entry.

Who is smarter, Rick or Evil Morty?
There is no official answer. Rick has the clearer cited example of scientific ingenuity: Adult Swim’s Season 2, Episode 1 clip describes him outsmarting a 4D being while evading time prison. Evil Morty is a leading strategic candidate, with “Rickmurai Jack” and “Unmortricken” serving as episode anchors for his larger arc. The available official sources do not compare their intelligence directly. The fairest answer depends on whether the question prioritizes invention or strategy.

What the episodes establish—and what they do not
- They establish distinct kinds of ability: invention, planning, political maneuvering, and tactical leadership are different measures.
- They offer story anchors, not a scorecard: Adult Swim lists “Unmortricken,” “Rickmurai Jack,” and “The Rickchurian Mortydate,” but does not publish a character ranking or IQ scale.
- They support specific feats: Adult Swim describes Rick outsmarting a 4D being in a Season 2, Episode 1 clip, and Morty leading an uprising in its “Morty defeats Evil Rick” clip.
- They do not establish a definitive top ten: the cited official pages do not provide a creator’s ranked list or enough episode-specific evidence to order ten characters responsibly.
