EA’s 2025 re-release of The Sims and The Sims 2 made two landmark single-player games available on modern Windows PCs, but an Ars Technica opinion piece argued that putting old games back on sale is not the same as preparing them well for today’s players. Its criticism—reports of launch and graphics problems, plus missing Steam Cloud saves and achievements—points to a wider expectation: preservation means more than access. It should also mean a dependable way to play. That is a pointed case study, not proof that every large publisher neglects single-player games.
What EA re-released in 2025
For The Sims’ 25th anniversary, EA released two PC products: The Sims: Legacy Collection and The Sims 2: Legacy Collection. EA announced a global rollout beginning January 31, 2025, through the EA app, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The original game collection includes the base game and seven listed expansions; the second includes The Sims 2 with its listed expansions and stuff packs. These are digital licenses, not boxed editions: EA says buyers receive a license to digital content and lists an internet connection, an EA Account, EA app installation, and single-use product-code registration among the requirements. Store prices and availability can vary by region and change over time, so the 2025 announcement prices should not be treated as current. (EA product page)
Why the release drew criticism
The reported problems were about basic playability
In a February 7, 2025 opinion article, Ars Technica’s Samuel Axon wrote that EA had put the originals on Steam with minor patches rather than remastering them. He summarized community reports of games that would not launch, crashed after launching, or displayed serious graphics problems, and noted that patches were still arriving. These are reports Axon described, not results of an independent technical audit or a verified count of affected players. The article does not establish a present-day failure rate. (Ars Technica)

Missing platform features mattered too
Axon also pointed to the absence of Steam Cloud support and achievements. For players, those omissions can make an old game feel less at home on a modern storefront, where cloud saves can help carry progress between devices and achievements provide a familiar platform feature. The criticism is not that every re-release must replace its original art or become a full remake. Axon values preserving the originals; his argument is that a release sold for current machines should be reliable and include reasonable modern support. (Ars Technica)
There is a useful qualification to the cloud-save complaint. Axon reports speaking with two professional developers who had published on Steam; their comments, as he summarizes them, suggest cloud saves and achievements can involve more work than users assume, particularly around save conflicts and protecting data. That makes “just add a checkbox” an oversimplification. It does not erase the central question of whether the publisher delivered a sufficiently polished product. (Ars Technica)

Is The Sims Legacy Collection a remaster?
Not in the sense described by Axon. He characterizes the 2025 release as the original games with minor patches, rather than a remaster. That distinction matters: preservation can keep the original assets and experience intact, while a remaster typically adds more substantial visual or technical changes. A release need not be a remaster to be worthwhile, but buyers can reasonably expect it to launch and run reliably on the operating systems for which it is sold. (Ars Technica; EA product page)
What the Command & Conquer comparison shows—and what it does not
Axon contrasts the Sims collections with EA’s Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, which offered a unified binary, higher-resolution sprites and textures, quality-of-life improvements, and achievements. The comparison makes the Sims release look narrower in feature scope and apparent polish. It does not establish that the projects had identical engineering requirements, nor does one comparison prove a pattern across the whole industry. (Ars Technica)

What this says about publishers and single-player games
The strongest conclusion is about the standard players can reasonably expect, not a statistical claim about every major publisher. A classic game returning to sale is valuable, but access alone does not solve compatibility, reliability, or the everyday platform features players have come to expect. The Sims re-release became a conspicuous example because the series’ history and its single-player appeal make those basics part of the product’s promise, not optional decoration.
At the same time, Axon’s piece is an opinion article responding to reported complaints, not a systematic study of re-releases. It supports a focused criticism of EA’s handling of these collections and a broader argument about what “preserving” a game should mean. It cannot establish how common the same shortcomings are across big publishers. A fair comparison between legacy releases should look at reliability on supported systems, how much of the original is preserved or changed, platform features, the included content, and the publisher’s post-launch support.

What EA says about the future of single-player Sims
EA’s January 9, 2026 update says single-player PC and console experiences will remain part of The Sims’ future. The company said more than half of its global development team was dedicated to The Sims 4 and “the next evolution.” That is EA’s stated staffing allocation and direction at that date, not an independently verified outcome or a promise of a particular game, release date, or feature set. In the same update, EA described Project Rene as a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-simulation game, separate from The Sims 4 and from any future deep single-player simulation experience. On EA’s stated terms, Project Rene is not the next deep single-player Sims game. The company has not used that statement to guarantee a specific successor or schedule. (EA’s January 2026 update)

EA’s longer-term franchise strategy
EA’s FY25 Q2 prepared remarks provide context for why the company talks about a Sims future built around multiple experiences rather than a simple sequence of numbered games. EA said The Sims 4 would serve as a foundation, allowing players to continue engaging with content they had collected and created over the prior decade, while the franchise expanded into different types of experiences. The company described deep simulation alongside cozy, social and collaborative, and mobile narrative games. These remarks explain EA’s strategy; they do not demonstrate that it is better for players. EA’s position is therefore not that single-player is ending, but that the franchise will include a continuing Sims 4 foundation and distinct experiences with different formats. That direction can coexist with the argument that a classic single-player release should meet a high bar for reliability and platform support. The two questions are related, but not interchangeable: one is about franchise strategy; the other is whether these particular collections were adequately prepared for modern players.
