The Simpsons Season 6 DVD: The Homer-Head Case and Standard Packaging Offer

The 2005 Season 6 DVD used a Homer-head clamshell in North America, with a historical route to request a standard box and digipak. The UK reportedly limited its Homer-head run to 50,000 copies.

The 2005 release of The Simpsons: The Complete Sixth Season came in a molded Homer-head clamshell in North America, replacing the cardboard cover and foldout digipak used for the first five seasons. Buyers who preferred a conventional season-set package were offered a historical way to request a standard box and digipak; the sources do not establish that the offer is still available.

Why Season 6 had different packaging

The North American Season 6 DVD set departed from the prior five seasons’ cardboard cover and foldout digipak. Instead, its discs came in a plastic clamshell molded in the shape of Homer’s head. A contemporaneous review described the case as more difficult to open than the earlier packaging.

The change concerned the set’s exterior and disc holder, not the season’s episodes or a new edition of the discs. The archival listing describes a four-disc collection with 25 episodes, commentaries, deleted scenes and other special features. The season reference also lists animatics, illustrated commentaries and the Springfield’s Most Wanted TV special. (The Simpsons Archive; season reference)

How the standard-box offer worked

An insert in the set directed buyers to a phone number and website to request standard packaging for the discs. The Simpsons Archive’s September 2005 news entry identified the website as Simpsonsbox.com. The offer was a route to different packaging for the DVD set, not a replacement of the discs. These records document a 2005 accommodation and do not confirm that the website, phone line or replacement service remains active. (The Simpsons Archive; contemporaneous review archive)

What the alternate package looked like

The standard package used a “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” theme, drawing on the mystery that concluded the fifth season. The archive’s review describes a removable, book-style holder for the four discs and an episode booklet. It was a conventional season-set presentation in place of the Homer-head-shaped case. Release dates and the UK packaging difference

The Simpsons Archive lists these release dates and reported UK packaging arrangements:

Rank #2
Market Release date listed by the archive Packaging detail reported
North America August 16, 2005 Homer-head clamshell; buyers were offered a route to request standard packaging.
Australia September 28, 2005 Packaging detail not stated in the archive’s cited entry.
United Kingdom October 17, 2005 The archive reported that the Homer-head version was limited to the first 50,000 copies, with later copies using standard packaging.

The 50,000 figure is the archive’s contemporary report of the UK Homer-head production limit; it is not a sales estimate or the total number of DVD sets made. The UK arrangement is distinct from the North American request route, and the reported limit is not independently confirmed here by a current rights-holder source.
