But if you treat the series premiere as the starting point and add the 36 full years elapsed by October 8, 2026, Bart would be about 46 and Lisa about 44. Those are hypothetical calculations, not the characters’ canonical ages. Exact real-time figures for Homer, Marge, and Maggie depend on starting ages the available sources do not establish.
How old would the Simpsons be if they aged in real time?
The standalone half-hour series premiered on December 17, 1989, according to the Television Academy. By October 8, 2026, 36 full calendar years had elapsed since that date. Adding 36 years to familiar in-show ages gives a useful thought experiment, provided the result is not mistaken for canon.
| Character | Conventional in-show age or description | Hypothetical age on October 8, 2026 | How to read the estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homer | A reliable, uniform starting age is not established by the sources cited here. | Not established | A precise figure would require choosing an assumed starting age. |
| Marge | A reliable, uniform starting age is not established by the sources cited here. | Not established | A precise figure would require choosing an assumed starting age. |
| Bart | 10 | About 46 | TIME described Bart as ten in 1994; adding 36 years is a hypothetical calculation, not a canonical age. |
| Lisa | 8 | About 44 | TIME described Lisa as eight in 1994, and Al Jean also called her eight in a Television Academy interview; adding 36 years is hypothetical. |
| Maggie | A baby | Not established | The cited descriptions do not specify her age in months at the premiere, so a precise calculation would require an assumption. |
The 36-year interval is arithmetic from the premiere date to October 8, 2026, not a published age statistic. Bart and Lisa’s estimates use their commonly described ages as a convenient baseline; they do not establish that either character was exactly that age on premiere day.
Why don’t the Simpsons age?
The show uses flexible continuity rather than a calendar that advances with its audience. In a June 1993 Q&A, creator Matt Groening explained, “One of the great things about animation is that your characters don’t have to age.” He joked that “Bart’s had his 10th birthday on the show three times already.” The Simpsons Archive’s transcript of the Q&A captures both the rule and the recurring-birthday joke.

In a 2012 interview, Groening called the format “rubber band reality”: the characters could remember events from the show’s history while Bart remained ten. The Los Angeles Times interview describes that tension between accumulated stories and a family that does not permanently age. The result is that birthdays, life changes, and references to past events do not add up to a consistent real-world timeline.
What is known about each main character’s age?
Homer and Marge
The sources cited here do not establish one consistent original age for either Homer or Marge. Without a defensible baseline tied to the premiere, adding 36 years would create false precision. Their hypothetical ages are therefore best left unspecified rather than filled in with a number based on an unverified starting point.

Bart
Bart is conventionally ten. TIME described him as ten in 1994, and Groening’s 1993 remark about his tenth birthday happening repeatedly makes clear that the show can acknowledge birthdays without advancing him permanently. “About 46” is what ten plus 36 produces for this thought experiment, not his current age in the series.
Lisa
Lisa is conventionally eight. TIME described her that way in 1994, and former showrunner Al Jean also referred to her as eight in a Television Academy interview. Adding the elapsed 36 years gives about 44, subject to the same baseline limitation as Bart’s estimate.

Maggie
Maggie is described as a baby, but the cited material does not give a precise age in months at the series premiere. Since even a small difference in her starting age changes a real-time estimate, the evidence supports calling her a baby in the show, not assigning her an exact age in 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret “real-time age” estimates
- In-show ages describe the characters as they are usually presented: Bart is ten, Lisa is eight, and Maggie is a baby.
- Hypothetical ages result from adding elapsed calendar years to a selected baseline. The answer changes if the baseline date or starting age changes.
- Canon does not provide a single, continuously aging timeline for the family. A calculated age is a fan-friendly comparison, not a new fact about the characters.
That distinction matters most for Homer, Marge, and Maggie, whose consistent starting ages are not established by the cited sources. The available evidence supports a clear calculation for Bart and Lisa only when their conventional ages are stated as assumptions.
