Julia Garner plays Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The familiar Silver Surfer is Norrin Radd, which helps explain why some viewers reacted to the trailer by asking whether the character was supposed to be a man. But Shalla-Bal is not a film-original invention: she has comic-book history and has taken on the Surfer role in an alternate-universe story.
Who is Julia Garner playing?
Garner portrays Shalla-Bal as the Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. She is not playing Norrin Radd, the best-known bearer of the Silver Surfer name. Entertainment coverage reported that Garner herself initially expressed surprise at the idea, asking, “Wait, isn’t the Silver Surfer a man?” Entertainment interview coverage
Why did some viewers say the Silver Surfer is a man?
Norrin Radd is the familiar Silver Surfer for many readers and viewers, so the trailer’s reveal of Garner as Shalla-Bal prompted some commenters to treat the casting as a gender change. A reported example put the reaction this way: “wait what… surfer is a male.” These are examples of responses, not evidence that the internet as a whole was angry or surprised. No representative poll or platform-wide measure establishes the scale of the reaction. Reaction coverage
Is Shalla-Bal an established Silver Surfer?
Yes. Shalla-Bal is an established Marvel character associated with Norrin Radd, and comic-history reporting identifies an alternate-universe story in which she takes on the Silver Surfer role. That means the film’s choice draws on a comics precedent rather than introducing Shalla-Bal as a character created for the movie. Comic-history coverage Additional comics context
