Spoilers for the Season 2 finale. The four roommates end the year facing different kinds of change: Kimberly kisses Canaan, Whitney’s ex, and risks her friendship with Whitney; Whitney changes her housing plans and moves toward Kappa; Bela takes the first step toward transferring from Essex; and Leighton leaves Kappa as she moves toward a more authentic life and reconnects with Alicia.
Kimberly and Whitney: the kiss changes their plans

Showrunner Justin Noble told TheWrap that Kimberly and Canaan’s connection began before Whitney dated him. He described Kimberly as someone whose good intentions do not stop her from causing chaos. That history gives context to the kiss, but it does not erase the hurt it causes Whitney.
Whitney: a different place to live
Whitney responds to the kiss by changing the roommate plan she had discussed with Kimberly. She takes the room Leighton leaves in the Kappa house. Noble described Leighton as having been Whitney’s “training wheels” in Kappa, so Whitney’s move also puts her relationship with that social world to a new test.

Bela: a fresh start is only a first step
Bela’s ambition to write for The Catullan has repeatedly collided with the effects of her choices on friends and colleagues. After hearing a list of the year’s setbacks, she considers leaving Essex and takes the first step toward transferring. The finale does not show a completed transfer or settle whether she will leave; it shows her deciding that a fresh start elsewhere might solve the problems she has accumulated.
Noble told TheWrap that Bela is focused on reaching the writers’ room at Saturday Night Live and can overlook the people affected along the way. Her end-of-year reckoning gives that ambition a consequence: she has to consider whether changing schools is a solution or another way to avoid confronting what happened.

Leighton: leaving Kappa and reconnecting with Alicia
Leighton drops Kappa, a departure Noble framed as shedding one of the last pieces of the identity she projected while closeted. Her experiences with Alicia and the Women’s Center have helped her move toward a life that feels more authentic. After coming out and exploring dating, Leighton’s relationship with Alicia can begin again on different terms; the finale brings Alicia back into her story.
As Noble put it to TheWrap, “Kappa, in many ways, was the last piece of the old Leighton Murray.” Leaving the house is therefore more than a change of address: it marks a break with a version of herself that no longer fits.

These are transitions and cliffhangers, not tidy resolutions. Season 3 was renewed by HBO Max on December 14, 2022, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The finale sets up changed friendships, housing, and belonging, but it does not establish what happens next, so these endings are best read as open questions rather than predictions about Season 3.
