The Seinfeld Cast Asked for $1 Million per Episode—and Missed Out on Profit Participation

Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards reportedly asked for $1 million per episode in 1997. They settled for a lower fee and, according to Alexander, were denied a share of the show’s profits.

In 1997, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards reportedly asked for $1 million per episode to return to Seinfeld. They agreed to two more seasons at a reported fee of up to $600,000 each per episode—not the $1 million they had sought. Their larger missed opportunity, according to Alexander, was a share of the show’s profits: the actors asked for backend participation and were denied.

How much did the Seinfeld cast make per episode?

The reported $1 million figure was the co-stars’ negotiating ask, not their settled salary. A May 1997 Los Angeles Times report said the three actors agreed to stay for two more seasons at a fee that industry sources estimated could reach $600,000 per episode each. The report characterized that as roughly a split between a reported $300,000 offer and the $1 million demand.

Those were contemporary reported terms, not a publicly disclosed contract. They describe the 1997 agreement for two additional seasons, not a current or lifetime earnings total.

Why did the actors say they missed out on more?

In a 2004 interview with SFGate, Alexander said he, Louis-Dreyfus and Richards first sought backend participation—a share of the show’s profits—and were turned down. He said the rejection led them to pursue much higher salaries instead.

“Julia, Michael and I, during our big renegotiation for the final year, asked for something that I will go to my grave saying we should have had, and that is back-end participation in the profits for the show.”

—Jason Alexander, speaking to SFGate in 2004

Alexander also said the request was “categorically denied.” His account explains the actors’ position, but the reporting does not give the percentage they sought or the terms of any proposed deal. There is no reliable basis for calculating what they might have earned if they had received backend participation.

How did their deal compare with Jerry Seinfeld’s?

Contemporary coverage distinguished the co-stars’ reported salaries from Jerry Seinfeld’s creator-related participation in the show’s profits. A January 1997 Los Angeles Times report described resentment among the co-stars over Seinfeld’s share of syndication revenue as a co-creator. A May 1997 Washington Post account described Seinfeld as receiving about $1 million per episode as well as a share of first-run and syndication profits.

Person or group Reported compensation or request What the reporting establishes
Alexander, Louis-Dreyfus and Richards Asked for $1 million per episode; agreed to a reported fee estimated at up to $600,000 each per episode Los Angeles Times, May 1997; the settlement figure was an industry-source estimate, not a disclosed contract.
Jerry Seinfeld About $1 million per episode plus first-run and syndication profit participation Washington Post, May 1997; the account describes reported compensation, not complete contract terms.

The contrast is between salary and creator-related profit participation, not a complete accounting of either side’s contracts. The available reports do not provide enough detail to compare the value of the arrangements over time.

Did the Seinfeld cast get royalties from reruns?

Alexander said the three co-stars received standard Screen Actors Guild residuals for reruns, rather than a share of the show’s profits. In 2004, he estimated that each had received about $250,000 in residuals by that point. That is his retrospective estimate, not an audited payment record or a current lifetime total.

Residuals and backend participation are different forms of compensation. Residuals are payments to performers under applicable agreements when a program is reused; backend participation means a contractual share of profits. Alexander’s comments describe the co-stars’ rerun payments as residuals, while contemporary reporting described Seinfeld as having a share of first-run and syndication profits.

What is known—and not known—about the missed profits?

  • Known: Alexander said the three actors requested backend participation and were denied it.
  • Known: Contemporary reports described Seinfeld’s creator-related profit participation and reported salaries for the co-stars.
  • Not established: The co-stars’ requested percentage, the full contract terms, and a defensible estimate of what a backend deal would have paid them.
  • Not established: A current, independently verified total of the co-stars’ residuals.

The story is therefore not that the trio earned nothing from reruns, nor that $1 million per episode was their confirmed salary. The documented distinction is that they pursued large guaranteed episode fees after their reported profit-participation request failed, while Seinfeld was reported to have both salary and creator-related participation.
