J.K. Rowling privately told Alan Rickman that Severus Snape loved Lily Potter—the emotional truth behind Snape’s word “Always.” It was a crucial clue for Rickman’s performance, not the full ending of the Harry Potter story.
What Rowling told Rickman
Rickman said in a 2011 interview with RTÉ that Rowling had given him “one little piece of information” that he had promised not to reveal. He said it helped him see Snape as “more complicated,” but kept the detail private at the time.
Rowling later explained the clue in a concise statement reproduced by the official Wizarding World site: “I told Alan what lies behind the word ‘always’.”
The diary entry made the clue explicit
In a diary entry quoted by The Guardian in 2022, Rickman identified Rowling’s information directly: “One small piece of information from Jo Rowling seven years ago – Snape loved Lily – gave me a cliff edge to hang on to.” The line connects Rowling’s explanation of “Always” to the fact that Snape loved Lily Potter.

Rickman described the information as an interpretive anchor: it helped him approach Snape as a layered character rather than a straightforward villain. It did not make Snape morally uncomplicated or erase the harm he caused.

No. In the same 2011 RTÉ interview, Rickman said Rowling had not told him how the story ended. He was reading the books alongside everyone else to find out what happened. The private clue gave him insight into Snape’s motivation, but it was not a full plot briefing.
