Spoiler-light review: “The Red Place” gives The Rookie one of its most unsettling cases, driven by David Krumholtz’s unnerving turn as Ezra. The episode still has room for the show’s parallel police and character stories, but the kidnapping rescue gives this 43-minute installment a darker, more horror-tinged pulse.

Season 8, Episode 3 is titled “The Red Place.” Prime Video lists it at 43 minutes and dates it Jan. 20, 2026. Why the villain feels so frightening
The central rescue story pushes the series toward horror by making danger feel intimate and immediate. This is not simply a puzzle about identifying a suspect: the episode’s premise puts Lucy and Celina in a race to reach a kidnapping victim while a killer remains part of the threat. The tension comes from that pursuit and from the disturbing presence at its center, not from the show abandoning its procedural framework.
David Krumholtz plays Ezra Kane, the killer discussed in TV Insider’s recap. His performance is the episode’s most potent source of unease: restrained enough to avoid turning menace into theatrics, yet unsettling enough to make the case linger. Calling Ezra “the creepiest villain yet” is a critical judgment, not an objective ranking—but this is a persuasive installment for viewers who want the series to lean into darker, more frightening criminals.

How the horror sits alongside the ensemble story
“The Red Place” does not devote its entire runtime to Lucy and Celina’s rescue effort. Nolan’s arrest, Harper and Lopez’s work on a killer, and Miles’s meeting from his past create an ensemble structure around the main suspense plot. That breadth is part of the series’ identity, though it also means the episode’s horror atmosphere shares space with familiar police-work and character-story rhythms instead of becoming a sustained horror exercise.
The contrast is most effective when the parallel threads add pressure or texture without diluting the central danger. The kidnapping case provides the episode’s darkest material; the other stories keep it recognizably The Rookie. Viewers seeking an uninterrupted thriller may find the shifts less concentrated, while fans of the ensemble format get more than one thread to follow.

What critics said
The available published reactions are favorable to different aspects of the episode, but they are individual reviews rather than evidence of a universal critical consensus. Rotten Tomatoes lists TV Fanatic’s review at 4.5/5; that review describes the case as a dark ordeal and praises Krumholtz as Ezra. It also lists Collider’s review at 8/10, which values the dramatic potential of investigations involving frightening criminals while calling for the Seth storyline to receive closure. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page lists both reviews and the episode metadata.
Those responses point to the episode’s strengths and its balancing act: Ezra and the kidnapping case give it a distinct dark edge, while the surrounding stories remain part of the experience. Collider’s note about Seth is a separate character-story concern, not a criticism of the rescue plot itself.

Should you watch it?
Watch “The Red Place” if you enjoy The Rookie when its procedural cases turn genuinely disturbing, or if Krumholtz’s performance is a draw. It is less suited to someone looking for a standalone horror episode with no procedural or ensemble detours. TV Insider’s recap identifies the kidnapper as Ezra Kane and discusses Samantha, but it is explicitly marked as containing major spoilers; avoid it if you want the case to unfold on screen first. Read the TV Insider recap only if spoilers are acceptable.
