Spoilers for “The Red Place,” Season 8, Episode 3. Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan makes an arrest that looks minor until it links a trespassing suspect to a three-year-old triple homicide. The case gives Lucy Chen and Celina Juarez a race to save another victim—and brings back the familiar face in Miles Penn’s storyline: Seth Ridley, whose self-pity and refusal to own his choices make his return a frustrating one.
What happens in “The Red Place”?
ABC identified the episode as “The Red Place” (803) and scheduled it for January 20, 2026, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. Its official synopsis sets up the episode’s parallel threads: Nolan makes a quiet arrest, Lucy and Celina try to rescue a kidnapping victim, Harper and Lopez work to outsmart a killer, and Miles visits a familiar face. Disney+ lists it as Season 8, Episode 3. The sequence below follows the case and character developments reported in TV Insider’s episode recap.
A quiet arrest opens an old murder case
Nolan arrests Ezra Kane, played by David Krumholtz, for trespassing at a recreation center. It seems like a small incident until detectives Angela Lopez and Nyla Harper connect Kane’s fingerprints to the sole print recovered from an Oregon triple-homicide scene three years earlier. Nolan questions Kane as the team tries to establish what happened—and whether anyone else is in danger.
Lucy and Celina find Samantha
Lucy and Celina follow a lead to a motel room connected to Kane. There they find Samantha, a teenager believed to have been killed alongside her parents. Instead, Kane had kept her there and threatened her family, leaving her to believe her parents were still alive.

Samantha says Kane called himself Amon and told her she was his “soulmate.” What she knows points the officers toward another girl, Julie. At the recreation center, the detectives find blood and Julie’s identification. Nolan uses Samantha’s description of Kane’s car to locate Julie alive, bleeding in its trunk.
“The red place” puts Samantha at risk
Kane refuses to reveal Julie’s location unless he can speak to Samantha. The officers will not put Samantha in front of him, but he uses the phrase “the red place”—a reference that reaches her and triggers a panic. Samantha injures herself with a syringe. Lucy gets her help while the team moves to reach Julie in time.

Why Lucy understands Samantha’s guilt
Lucy recognizes Samantha’s tendency to blame herself for what happened. She shares that she was kidnapped during her own rookie year, then describes moving away from obsessing over what she could have done differently and toward recognizing that she survived.
TV Insider’s recap reports Lucy telling Samantha, “The first step of recovery is to stop blaming herself.” That wording is reported by the recap rather than independently verified against a transcript. The scene connects this case to Lucy’s history without making Samantha’s recovery sound simple or immediate.

Who is the familiar face Miles visits?
It is Seth Ridley, played by Patrick Keleher. The episode finds Seth wallowing and blaming other people rather than taking responsibility for his part in what happened. Miles eventually offers help, but makes honesty a condition of that support.
That distinction is the strongest reason the storyline can be both exasperating and useful: Miles does not treat compassion as proof that Seth has changed, or as a reason to excuse dishonesty. Fangirlish’s review likewise emphasizes the boundary Miles sets while offering help. TV Insider called Seth’s return the episode’s “lone weak part” and said the reviewer did not need to keep seeing him. “Worst character” is a judgment, not an objective ranking, but Seth’s self-pity and blame-shifting provide the behavior behind the episode’s less charitable reading of him.

How the episode balances the case and its smaller relationship beats
The kidnapping investigation carries the episode’s immediate stakes; Lucy’s connection to Samantha supplies its emotional center. The Miles-and-Seth visit is a quieter, more contentious counterpoint about accountability. TV Insider praised the interrogation scenes while criticizing the Seth material, a split that captures why the character thread may not work equally well for every viewer.
Elsewhere, Lucy and Tim Bradford deal with her boxes after she moves in with him. Angela and Wesley also get an anniversary beat: both initially forget the date. These domestic moments give the episode relationship texture alongside the investigation, without displacing its central rescue plot.
