The Rock beat Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8 in 2002, then invited him back into the ring and left the arena with him. WWE’s description of the post-match moment calls it a show of respect—a fitting coda to an “Icon vs. Icon” match remembered as much for Hogan’s crowd support as for its result.
Why “WrestleMania 18” is also called WrestleMania X8
WWE styles the event as WrestleMania X8; “WrestleMania 18” is a common way to refer to the same event. WWE says Hogan returned to WrestleMania at X8 to face The Rock, in his first WrestleMania match since WrestleMania IX.
What happened after The Rock beat Hulk Hogan?
The Rock won the match. In a verified video listing published May 18, 2024, WWE says that after the victory, The Rock invited Hogan back into the ring and exited the arena with him. The listing’s description presents the gesture as respect; it is WWE’s account of the moment rather than a transcript.
Why the match and gesture mattered
WWE billed the contest as “Icon vs. Icon,” placing two generations of wrestling stars opposite one another. Its retrospective notes Hogan’s strong fan support and the crowd’s part in the match’s story. The result went to The Rock, but the post-match invitation gave the encounter a gracious final beat: the winner brought his opponent back into the spotlight rather than leaving the moment solely to the victory.
