Spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 8. The finale confirms the Stranger is Gandalf, kills Celebrimbor and Adar, awakens the Balrog beneath Khazad-dûm, and leaves Sauron alive after Galadriel rejects him. Its central idea is that the Rings Sauron wants to use for control also bind him to his own ambition.

Who is the Stranger? Is he Gandalf?

Yes. The finale confirms the Stranger is Gandalf when he asks Tom Bombadil, “Gandalf—that’s what they’re going to call me, isn’t it?” The identity is no longer just a hint or viewer theory. The Dark Wizard, by contrast, remains unnamed at the episode’s end. Radio Times and Vanity Fair recap the reveal.

What happened to Celebrimbor?

Celebrimbor completes the Rings but dies rather than give them to Sauron. Sauron tortures him to learn where the Rings are, then impales him when he refuses to surrender them. Celebrimbor’s dying words are: “No, you are their prisoner, Sauron—Lord of the Rings.”

Why does Celebrimbor call Sauron the Lord of the Rings?

The line turns Sauron’s claim to mastery against him. He wants the Rings to dominate others, but his ambition makes him dependent on the very instruments of control he created. Showrunner Patrick McKay described Sauron as “a slave of his own ambition,” and said the story’s opposing declarations are: “You’re the Lord of the Rings!” and “No, you’re the Lord of the Rings!” Vanity Fair’s interview with McKay and J.D. Payne explains the intended tension: the Rings are tools of power, but the desire to wield them becomes its own form of captivity.

What happened to Adar?

Adar returns Galadriel’s ring and tries to form an alliance against Sauron, but the turn comes too late: Orcs kill him. Director Charlotte Brändström said Adar’s death was planned, adding that its emotional force comes from the fact that “he dies when he wants to do good.” The episode gives him a brief attempt at redemption, not a successful escape from the violence he helped set in motion. TheWrap’s interview with Brändström discusses the choice.

Why does Galadriel jump, and does she survive?

Sauron tries to persuade Galadriel to join him, then attacks her and takes the nine Rings for Men. Galadriel keeps her own ring and leaps from the cliff rather than surrender to him. The Elves find and revive her, so the jump is not her death. Sauron survives the confrontation, while the Elves regroup after Eregion’s destruction.

What happened to Durin III and the Balrog?

Durin III’s ring corrupts his judgment and pushes him to mine deeper. The excavation awakens the Balrog. Durin dies confronting it and appears to contain it again, but Khazad-dûm remains under threat. The finale presents the Balrog as a danger set in motion, not a threat permanently resolved. McKay compared its role to a fuse whose danger grows over time; that is his description of the story’s pacing, not a claim that the creature is already loose across Middle-earth. Vanity Fair covers the showrunner’s explanation.

What happens to Númenor?

Pharazôn turns Miriel’s success in the sea trial into an accusation of conspiracy, escalating the political crisis. Elendil escapes with Miriel’s help and receives Narsil. The immediate outcome is Elendil’s flight and Miriel’s continued danger; Narsil’s later importance to Isildur and the One Ring is a connection to the wider legendarium, not an event the finale itself resolves. TVLine’s finale recap follows the Númenórean developments.

Where does the finale leave the Elves?

Eregion has been devastated, but the Elves are not finished fighting. Gil-galad rallies them to take the offensive against Sauron. This ending shifts the conflict from the fall of one city toward a broader struggle, while the other storylines show separate societies facing the consequences of dangerous power.

What the ending means

The finale’s clearest thematic answer comes through Celebrimbor’s accusation: Sauron may call himself master, but his hunger for control makes him captive to the Rings and to the ambition that produced them. The other endings widen that idea without resolving every threat: Durin’s ring helps bring the Balrog into play, Númenor fractures politically, and the Elves prepare to resist Sauron. The episode closes with several crises in motion rather than a single final catastrophe.
