The line “The richest man is the one with the most powerful friends” is attributed to Don Altobello in The Godfather Part III—not to Robert Duvall. The wording makes a compelling case for influence over money, but calling it the “most powerful” movie quote is a personal judgment, not an established ranking.
Who says “The richest man is the one with the most powerful friends”?
The likely line behind the title is spoken by Don Altobello during an exchange with Vincent Mancini in The Godfather Part III. A transcript and an IMDb quotes page both attribute it to Altobello (Simpleremix transcript; IMDb quotes).
That attribution matters because the title’s wording could leave readers thinking Robert Duvall delivered the line. The cited sources instead identify Altobello, and a 1992 Los Angeles Times profile says Duvall did not make The Godfather III (Los Angeles Times profile, November 15, 1992). The available evidence therefore does not support crediting this line to Duvall.
Why the quote sounds powerful
The line compresses a familiar idea into a memorable reversal: wealth is not only what someone owns, but also the influence and protection they can draw from their relationships. In the world of The Godfather Part III, where family ties and political connections shape power, the observation fits its setting. Its force comes from that contrast between visible riches and less visible leverage.
#1 Best Overall
Whether it is the most powerful movie quote is subjective. The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking for this line. A Moviebuff page refers to an AFI ranking for a different quote from The Godfather; that placement is not a ranking of Altobello’s line (Moviebuff film page).

To hear the line as part of the conversation rather than as a standalone maxim, look for the exchange between Altobello and Vincent in The Godfather Part III. A 2001 review documents a DVD collection containing all three Godfather films, along with supplementary documentaries, biographies, stills, and a family tree (Leeds Student, October 26, 2001). That review confirms a historical release, not the current availability or specifications of any edition.
