The Return of the Projectionist, Orkhan Aghazadeh’s 2024 documentary, is scheduled to premiere exclusively on INDIEPIX UNLIMITED on November 6, 2026, according to BroadwayWorld’s October 5, 2026 announcement. The 87-minute film follows a bereaved former projectionist and a teenage aspiring filmmaker as they try to revive moviegoing in a remote Azerbaijani village.
What is The Return of the Projectionist about?
The documentary is set in Sym, a remote village in Azerbaijan’s Talysh Mountains. Samid once showed films there, when cinema was part of village life. In the present-day story, he repairs radios and televisions for a living, while his old Soviet-era projector sits unused. A year after his son dies in a workplace accident, Samid attempts to bring his neighbors together for a screening.
The plan faces practical and social obstacles: the projector bulb is broken, there is no screen, a censorship committee and village rumors complicate the effort, and the surviving film print is missing its ending. Samid and Ayaz, a 16-year-old interested in filmmaking and phone imagery, try to find a signal to order a replacement bulb, persuade villagers to sew a screen, and get old video recorders working again.
Their partnership brings Samid’s experience and craft together with Ayaz’s curiosity and familiarity with social media. The announcement frames the film around grief, memory, intergenerational friendship, community, and changing ways of experiencing cinema. It poses the screening as a possible moment of connection for Samid and the village; that is the promotional synopsis’s framing, not a confirmation of how the film ends.
