The first trailer for The Remarkable Life of Ibelin pairs family reflections and accounts from Mats Steen’s online friends with animated scenes from World of Warcraft. The animation depicts reconstructed gameplay—not events from Steen’s offline life—and the relationships at its center were real.

Who was Ibelin?

Mats Steen was a Norwegian gamer who died at 25. In World of Warcraft, he played Ibelin, a character whose adventures and friendships became part of his life online. The trailer presents that world alongside the people who knew him offline and through the game.

After Mats died, his parents, Robert and Trude Steen, initially believed he had lived an isolated life. Messages and accounts from his online community showed them that he had built friendships they had not fully known about. The trailer moves between their reflections and voices from those friends.

What is real, and what is fantasy, in the trailer?

The fantasy is the setting and visual language of World of Warcraft: Ibelin’s character, the game’s environments, and animated actions within that world. The film describes these sequences as reconstructed animated moments based on Mats’s gameplay. They are not literal footage of his offline life.

The experiences behind those scenes are presented through recorded gameplay, blog entries, and testimony from people who knew Mats. Interviews and family material provide other parts of the documentary’s account. The animation gives viewers a way to see the social world in which those connections formed; it does not make the friendships fictional.

How the film combines animation and testimony

Directed by Benjamin Ree, the documentary brings together three kinds of material: animated reconstructions of gameplay, narration of Mats’s blog entries, and interviews with people who knew him as Ibelin. That approach makes the online community visible while preserving the distinction between a game-world reconstruction and the people describing their experiences.

Rank #2

In the trailer, Mats is heard saying, “In there, my chains are broken, and I can be whoever I want to be.” The line conveys how the game world could offer him a sense of freedom beyond the physical constraints associated with his degenerative muscular disease.

Robert Steen addresses his son in another moment: “You proved us wrong. You proved us so wrong.” In context, the line reflects how the family’s understanding of Mats’s life changed after hearing from the people he had met online.

What the trailer tells you about the documentary

The trailer introduces a story about a family discovering the extent of a life they had not fully seen, and about online friendships that mattered beyond the game. Its visual shifts between interviews and fantasy animation are part of how the documentary tells that story, not evidence that the relationships were imaginary.

Netflix’s Media Center listed select U.S. theatrical screenings beginning October 18, 2024, followed by a U.S. Netflix release on October 25, 2024, at 7:00 a.m. GMT. Those are historical U.S. release details and do not establish current availability in other regions.
