The Regime stars Kate Winslet as Chancellor Elena Vernham, with Matthias Schoenaerts as Corporal Herbert Zubak, the palace monitor who becomes her confidant. The main cast’s relationships map the fictional regime’s power structure: Elena’s husband and palace staff are close to her court, while a U.S. senator, a former rival and cabinet members press in from outside and within.
HBO’s The Regime is a political satire set in a fictional contemporary Central European regime, not a dramatization of a specific government or event. Its story follows Elena’s increasingly unstable leadership and her consequential relationship with Zubak as the regime begins to unravel. TheWrap’s cast guide, published March 3, 2024, describes the setup as Elena turning to Zubak as an “unlikely confidant.” Read TheWrap’s cast guide.
