Owen Hendricks, a newly recruited CIA lawyer, opens his first week with a threatening letter from Max Meladze, a former Russian asset who says she will expose the agency unless it clears her of a serious crime. The season ends with Owen and Max tied up in a leaky basement when Max’s daughter, Karolina, walks in with a gun and shoots Max in the chest. Whether Max survives is not resolved in the official coverage. Season 2, according to Netflix’s official synopsis, moves Owen to South Korea and raises the possibility that the bigger threat is inside the Agency.
The premise in brief
Owen is a rookie CIA lawyer, not an experienced field operative. The job he starts with is ordinary legal work, and that is what makes the first case so disruptive. Netflix Tudum’s season guide, published December 31, 2024, names Noah Centineo as Owen and Laura Haddock as Max, describes Season 1 as an eight-episode story, and confirms that the episodes stream on Netflix.
Owen: a lawyer pulled into operations
Owen discovers Max’s letter in his first week. What starts as a legal assignment expands into something Netflix Tudum describes as an international, morally gray espionage problem. The case brings in agency politics and personal risk, and it tests Owen both professionally and personally.
Max: a former asset with leverage
Max is a former Russian asset accused of a serious crime. Her leverage is the threat to expose the agency unless it clears her. That threat is the reason Owen is drawn into the case at all, and it sets the rest of the season in motion.

The Season 1 finale
The finale is built around a single confrontation. Owen and Max are tied up in a leaky basement, and the episode treats that setting as both a violent cliffhanger and a family confrontation.
The shooting
A blond woman enters the basement with a gun. Max recognizes her as Karolina. Karolina shoots Max in the chest. The shooting is the confirmed event of the episode; what follows it is not.

Karolina’s reveal
Karolina then turns to Owen and asks:
“Who are you, and what the fuck are you doing with my mother?”
That line establishes that Karolina is Max’s daughter and recasts the finale as a family conflict playing out in the middle of an espionage plot.

Is Max dead?
The official answer is that Max’s death has not been confirmed. Netflix Tudum’s finale explainer, “Breaking Down the Cliff-Hanger Ending of The Recruit,” published March 5, 2024, reports that creator Alexi Hawley would not say whether Max was dead. The safe recap wording is that Karolina shoots Max and Max’s fate is left uncertain at the end of Season 1.
What the creator says
Hawley explains the long-running characterization of Max this way, as quoted by Netflix Tudum:
