When Neal learns Del has no home or family waiting for him, he goes back and invites him to join the Page family. The journey’s comic disasters matter, but the film’s emotional destination is an act of welcome.
What is the meaning of Planes, Trains and Automobiles?
John Hughes’s 1987 comedy follows Neal Page, played by Steve Martin, and Del Griffith, played by John Candy, as they try to get Neal home for Thanksgiving. Neal measures the trip in missed connections, discomfort and lost time. Del initially appears to be the source of those problems: he is talkative, intrusive and hard for Neal to travel with.

That friction gives the comedy its shape. Martin described Neal’s serious temperament as the base that makes the comic situations work: “the more serious and tense the character is, the funnier it gets when he goes crazy or finds himself in an awkward situation.” The contrast is not just a setup for jokes. It lets the film show Neal’s perspective changing as he discovers what Del is facing.
The ending makes the change concrete. Del’s wife is dead, and he has no home to return to. Once Neal understands that, he does not simply resume his trip; he returns for Del and brings him into his Thanksgiving gathering. The film suggests that compassion begins when Neal stops treating a stranger as an inconvenience and sees the person’s circumstances.

Why does Neal go back for Del?
Neal realizes that Del’s travel plans have no welcoming home at their end. Del is not merely a salesman enduring a difficult journey; he is alone. Neal’s decision to go back is therefore a choice, not an obligation imposed by the travel mishaps. His invitation gives Del a place at the holiday table and turns empathy into hospitality.
Hughes stated the hope behind the film plainly: “Hopefully, though, people will walk out with a little more compassion for the guy in the middle seat with the funny-looking coat.” That remark supports an interpretation centered on fellow-feeling, without making it the only possible reading. The film’s humor and tenderness coexist: Neal’s impatience drives much of the comedy, while his final choice changes how the audience understands Del and their trip.
How the released ending differs from the screenplay
The emotional turn was shaped during editing. Editor Paul Hirsch recalled that an exchange in which Del offers to repay Neal had been cut. Test audiences then began to see Del as taking advantage of Neal; restoring the exchange changed that response. Hirsch said the ending was reworked so Neal would work out for himself that Del was homeless and go back to fetch him.
That released version relies on Neal’s recognition rather than a long explanation from Del. A screenplay transcription presents a more explicit version of the arrival at the Page home, with Del expressing gratitude at the Thanksgiving table. The difference is useful: the screenplay makes Del’s welcome more directly verbal, while the finished film makes Neal’s return the decisive evidence of his changed understanding. The transcription reflects that text, but does not establish that the PDF is an authorized or commercially available edition.

The premise was loosely inspired by a holiday trip Hughes reportedly endured. After planning a short New York visit before returning to Chicago, he faced a five-day journey disrupted by weather that reached Phoenix. That experience is an inspiration for the film, not proof that its fictional characters or individual mishaps reproduce Hughes’s trip.
Reading the film as a story about empathy does not erase its comedy or require treating Del’s loneliness as a twist for its own sake. The ending matters because Neal finally sees the cost of the journey from Del’s side—and responds by making room for him.
