Coraline began as Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novel, not as an adaptation of a single real-life event. For the film, director Henry Selick and the design team shaped that story through stop-motion influences, a deliberate contrast between its two worlds, and specific visual and costume references.
What was Coraline based on?
The film adapts Neil Gaiman’s 2002 novel. Selick recalled meeting Gaiman and receiving unpublished pages years before the book appeared; he could already picture them as a film while reading. The novel is the story’s direct source, while the film’s visual character reflects choices made in adapting it.

Was The Thief of Always an inspiration?
Neil Gaiman said Clive Barker’s The Thief of Always was not a meaningful influence on his writing process for Coraline. In a 2009 journal response, he explained that he noticed the possible resemblance on the book’s back cover when he was already halfway through writing Coraline, and did not buy Barker’s book at that point. He later read it and said it was not as similar to his story as he had feared. That is Gaiman’s account of the books’ timing and his process; it does not mean they share no themes.

How did Henry Selick’s influences shape the film?
Stop-motion’s handmade texture
Selick recalled being impressed by a Ray Harryhausen film as a child and named Rankin/Bass Christmas specials among his formative viewing. He said stop-motion suited Coraline because it could hold fairy-tale charm and unsettling moments together. As he put it, “Stop-motion is flawed, its textures are real, and I think it invites the audience to work a little to make it happen in their minds.”

Selick also named Czech animator and filmmaker Jan Švankmajer as a major influence on his work. In discussing the film’s sawdust effect, he connected it to making the characters feel like constructed “living dolls.” This is a production and aesthetic influence, not evidence that Švankmajer supplied the plot.

Two worlds with different visual depth
The film distinguishes Coraline’s ordinary surroundings from the other world through more than color or story. Selick described the real-world scenes as more muted and less dimensional, reserving greater 3D depth for the other world so viewers would be drawn into it as Coraline is. He said, “I wanted to save 3D for the other world, to draw people into the 3D space as Coraline is being drawn into that world herself.”

Tadahiro Uesugi’s visual references
Designer Tadahiro Uesugi said he started character designs from his reading of the Japanese edition of Gaiman’s book, then developed sets and backgrounds. He cited 1950s and 1960s graphic design, and 101 Dalmatians as an example of animation style from that period. These references describe the film’s visual development rather than the origin of the story.

Deborah Cook’s Other Mother costume
Costume designer Deborah Cook said Selick’s character ideas guided her work. For the Other Mother’s transforming outfit, Cook drew on tropical beetle shells, wings and undercarriages, combining those shapes with graphic prints and the look of high-end designer dresses.
