Halloween has no single, proven origin. Its October 31 date and name come from the Christian eve of All Saints’ Day, while its seasonal setting and some folk customs are often associated with Samhain and other European traditions. The familiar American holiday—costumes, pranks and trick-or-treating—took shape over centuries, with trick-or-treating becoming widespread in the United States after World War II.
What is the real origin of Halloween?
Halloween is best understood as a layered holiday, not an ancient festival that survived unchanged. Its name derives from All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before All Hallows’ Day, or All Saints’ Day, on November 1. Seasonal beliefs and practices associated with Samhain, as well as medieval Christian customs and later immigrant traditions, contributed to the holiday’s history.
The Library of Congress notes that the origins of trick-or-treating are disputed and identifies three explanations rather than a settled lineage. That uncertainty matters: similarities between customs can suggest influence, but do not prove a direct, unbroken chain from one ancient ritual to today’s Halloween.
How Samhain relates to Halloween
Samhain is a Gaelic-named Celtic festival associated with the end of the harvest season and the transition toward winter. The Library of Congress describes traditions involving bonfires, disguises and beliefs about spirits; Smithsonian Magazine describes Samhain as marking summer’s end and a new year around November 1, when supernatural beings were believed to cross into the human world.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These accounts describe historical beliefs and traditions, not a uniform ceremony practiced identically by every ancient Celtic community. Samhain is an important seasonal comparison and a possible influence on Halloween customs, but modern Halloween should not be called simply “Samhain” or treated as an unchanged version of it.
Why Halloween is on October 31
The immediate calendar explanation is All Hallows’ Eve: October 31 is the eve of All Hallows’ Day, observed on November 1. All Souls’ Day follows on November 2. The Christian observances explain Halloween’s name and placement on the calendar, even as seasonal folk traditions around the same time contributed to its wider character.

Smithsonian Magazine reports that Pope Gregory III moved the celebration of the saints from May 13 to November 1 in the eighth century, and says this change likely reflected efforts to assimilate pagan influences. That is one interpretation of the change, not a universally established explanation. The history is more accurately described as overlap and adaptation between religious observances and folk practices than as the Church simply inventing Halloween to replace Samhain.
How trick-or-treating developed
There is no single confirmed origin for trick-or-treating. The Library of Congress summarizes the uncertainty plainly: “There is much debate around the origins of trick-or-treating, but generally there are three theories.” The proposed traditions differ in region, period and what people exchanged or performed:

| Proposed tradition | What participants did | How it relates to trick-or-treating |
|---|---|---|
| Samhain-associated offerings | Offerings were associated with seasonal customs and beliefs about spirits. | One proposed ancestor; the connection does not establish a direct line to modern door-to-door visits. |
| Souling and Scottish guising | In souling, people received food or money in exchange for prayers for the dead. Guisers later visited in disguise and performed songs, jokes or other tricks. | The exchange of a performance for food or money resembles parts of the later custom, but does not prove a definitive origin. |
| German-American belsnickeling | Children in disguise visited neighbors and could receive food or treats. | A separate proposed influence involving disguised children and neighbor visits. |
These practices should remain distinct rather than being compressed into a single origin story. The evidence cited by the Library of Congress presents them as theories, not a proven chain of descent.
How Halloween became an American children’s holiday
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween traditions to the United States beginning in the 1840s, according to Smithsonian Magazine. The U.S. Census Bureau likewise traces the arrival of customs to Irish and other immigrants in the mid-19th century. Halloween became a popular pastime, especially for children, during the 20th century.

The phrase “trick-or-treat” appeared in the 1920s, but that does not identify the first use or settle the custom’s origins. The practice grew markedly after World War II, when sugar rationing ended. Suburbs offered accessible routes between homes, and individually wrapped candy made it easier to hand out treats. This postwar growth is the clearest broad explanation for how door-to-door trick-or-treating became familiar across the United States.

No. The Library of Congress describes an Irish tradition of carving turnips, associated with the legend of Stingy Jack, who was said to carry a burning coal inside a hollowed turnip. Pumpkins became the familiar material in the later American form of the custom. A pumpkin lantern is now a recognizable Halloween symbol, but it is not the original Irish lantern described in this tradition.

What the historical record does—and does not—show
Halloween brings together an identifiable Christian calendar setting, seasonal traditions associated with Samhain, and customs that changed as people and practices moved between regions. The available accounts support that layered history; they do not establish that every modern custom descends directly from one ancient ritual.
Modern American scale figures describe potential participants and places, not actual Halloween activity. In a September 30, 2025 fact sheet, the U.S. Census Bureau counted 133.2 million occupied U.S. housing units in 2023 as potential trick-or-treat stops and estimated 73.1 million U.S. children under 18 as of July 1, 2024 as potential trick-or-treaters. Those figures are not counts of homes that handed out candy or children who went trick-or-treating.
