Federal records say Carlesha Freeland-Gaither was abducted in Philadelphia on November 2, 2014, and rescued in Maryland three days later. Delvin Barnes pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The film is separate from Finding Carlesha, a 2024 documentary.
What really happened to Carlesha Gaither?
According to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, 22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither was walking in the 100 block of West Coulter Street in Philadelphia at about 9:40 p.m. on November 2, 2014, when Delvin Barnes grabbed her and forced her into his car. The official account says she fought back, striking Barnes with a hammer after he put her in the car. He drove to Maryland with her bound in the trunk. The federal case account provides the incident and prosecution details.
Federal agents arrested Barnes in Jessup, Maryland, on November 5, and Freeland-Gaither was rescued. The U.S. Attorney’s Office release says she identified Barnes as her abductor. The same release states that Barnes pleaded guilty to kidnapping on September 10, 2015.
What happened to Delvin Barnes?
On June 30, 2016, Barnes was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania wrote: “Barnes was sentenced today to 35 years in prison for kidnapping.” The sentencing announcement identifies the sentence and its date.

What is dramatized in the Lifetime film?
Cineflix describes Abducted Off the Street: The Carlesha Gaither Story as a scripted Lifetime production, one film with a 90-minute format. Its credits list Riele Downs as Carlesha, Kenya Moore as her mother Keisha, and Sam Asante as Delvin Barnes. Lifetime presents it as a 2024 true-story suspense film and describes a plot in which Carlesha’s mother and a detective help search for her. Those are details of the film’s dramatic presentation; they should not be treated as independent confirmation of every scene or event. See the Cineflix production page and Lifetime’s title page.
For the underlying chronology—including the abduction, rescue, guilty plea, and sentence—the federal case releases are the relevant records. A contemporaneous CBS Philadelphia report documents that authorities released surveillance video while seeking a person of interest during the investigation; it provides context for the public search, not a substitute for the federal account of the case. How is Finding Carlesha different?
Finding Carlesha is a separate 2024 documentary, not another name for the Lifetime scripted film. Peacock lists the documentary with a 52-minute runtime. The Lifetime title is the scripted 90-minute production described by Cineflix. The available listings establish the formats and runtimes, not that either title is currently available to every viewer.
