For a straightforward first watch, see all 26 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, then The End of Evangelion, followed by the four Rebuild of Evangelion films in release order. You can watch the series finale and The End of Evangelion both; this route does not ask you to choose one instead of the other.
What order should I watch Evangelion in?
- Neon Genesis Evangelion — all 26 episodes.
- The End of Evangelion.
- Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone.
- Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance.
- Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo.
- Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time.
This release-oriented route keeps the original series and its accompanying film together, then treats Rebuild as a separate four-film sequence. The official announcement for the final Rebuild film identifies it as the fourth film and names the three preceding entries.
Do I need to watch Death(True)² or Death & Rebirth?
No. Death(True)², also associated with the title Death & Rebirth, is optional for a first viewing. Its Death portion recaps material from the series, while Rebirth covers an early portion of The End of Evangelion. It is extra recap and partial-film material, not a prerequisite for the order above.
If you want the additional material, watch it after the original series and before The End of Evangelion. Otherwise, skip it without disrupting the beginner route.
#1 Best Overall
Which route fits your first watch?
| Route | What to watch | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Essential beginner route | 26-episode series, The End of Evangelion, then the four Rebuild films | A direct path through the main series and film sequence, without extra recap material |
| Completionist route | Add Death(True)² between the series and The End of Evangelion | Viewers who want the recap and additional partial-film material |
No precise runtime comparison is established for these routes, so the practical difference is whether you want the extra material.
What do the different Rebuild edition numbers mean?
For the first three films, use the numbered home-release forms 1.11, 2.22, and 3.33 when those are the editions available to you. The final film appears as 3.0+1.01 in the viewing sequence and as 3.0+1.11 in some physical-release listings. For example, GKIDS names its 4K UHD Collector’s Edition EVANGELION:3.0+1.11. Catalogs and available editions can differ by region, so check the title and edition listed by your service or retailer.
