Spoilers for the full manga. This ranking covers characters from across The Promised Neverland, including later manga characters who have not been established here as anime-only material. The order is editorial, not an official franchise ranking: it weighs character development, strategic importance, emotional impact, and contribution to the plot. The series was created by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu and follows Emma, Norman, and Ray at Grace Field House (Shueisha’s series page).
How this ranking works
There is no official top-ten list or verified audience poll establishing a definitive order. These placements reflect how strongly each character shapes the story, not a claim about popularity. Because the list uses manga-wide material, it includes details from later volumes; readers who have only watched the anime may encounter unfamiliar characters and developments.
The 10 best characters in The Promised Neverland, ranked
10. Phil
Phil earns a place for what he represents within Grace Field House: the younger children whose safety gives the escape story its emotional stakes. The official anime profile identifies him as academically capable and says he admires Emma. That is a meaningful foundation, though the profile does not establish a full-series character arc, so this ranking does not overstate his development (official anime character profiles).
9. Lucas
Lucas makes the list for his role in the later survival conflict. VIZ’s synopsis for volume 13 says that when armed intruders drive the children from their shelter, Lucas and Yugo step forward to fight. That places him in a concrete protective role, even if a publisher synopsis alone cannot support a detailed reading of his entire characterization (VIZ, volume 13).

8. Don
Don is bright, competitive, and deeply invested in the other children, according to the official anime profile. His importance is not just a matter of loyalty: volume 3’s publisher summary describes Don and Gilda questioning what Emma’s group has told them. His doubts give the group’s plans a useful test from within, and his path toward trust makes him more than a background supporter (official anime character profiles; Shueisha’s series and volume pages).
7. Gilda
Gilda’s reserved manner can make her easier to overlook, but the official profile describes her as calm in judgment and analytically sharp. Alongside Don, she tests the story she is given rather than accepting it automatically. That discernment is a valuable counterweight to the urgency of the escape plan (official anime character profiles; Shueisha’s series and volume pages).
Rank #2

6. Yugo
Yugo ranks above Lucas because the volume 13 summary frames him as one of the adults who steps into danger to defend the children after their shelter is compromised. His place here is grounded in that later-arc protective function, not in an unsupported claim that he is universally considered a fan favorite. His inclusion also makes this explicitly a manga-wide ranking (VIZ, volume 13).
5. Krone
Krone is distinct from Isabella: she serves as Isabella’s assistant, and the official profile describes her as powerful, energetic, and popular in the house. Publisher summaries place her among the forces closing in on the children’s escape effort. That combination gives her presence and competing motives; reducing her to a simple obstacle misses what makes her part of the story’s tense early power structure (official anime character profiles; Shueisha’s series and volume pages).
Rank #3

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Isabella
Isabella’s position as the children’s beloved “Mom” is central to the story’s first major conflict. The official profile sets that maternal role against the schemes described in Shueisha’s early volume summaries, which follow her response to the children’s escape plan. The contrast between the care she appears to provide and the role she plays in the conflict makes her one of the series’ most consequential figures (official anime character profiles; Shueisha’s series and volume pages).
3. Ray
Ray’s intellectual ability is the one the official profile says can match Norman’s. That makes him essential to the group’s planning, but his value to the story also comes from the contrast between his approach and Emma’s. Where Emma leads with conviction, Ray’s knowledge and planning sharpen the practical side of their struggle. The ranking places him just below the two characters whose conflict of methods most visibly drives the central story (official anime character profiles).

2. Norman
Norman is Grace Field’s leading analytical talent, with calm judgment, according to the official profile. VIZ’s volume 1 description places him with Emma when they uncover the truth about the outside world. His strategic importance and the tension between calculation and personal attachment make him one of the series’ defining characters (official anime character profiles; VIZ, volume 1).
1. Emma
Emma takes the top place because her leadership gives the group’s struggle its defining moral force. The official profile describes her as athletic, quick to learn, and a source of morale for the other children. VIZ’s first-volume synopsis places her alongside Norman in discovering the truth that changes their lives. Her conviction shapes the story’s plans and gives its conflicts an emotional center (official anime character profiles; VIZ, volume 1).
