The inquest reported that Keith Flint died by hanging. At the final hearing, however, Essex Senior Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded an open conclusion: the evidence did not establish whether his death was suicide or an accident.
What was Keith Flint’s cause of death?
The post-mortem recorded death by hanging, as reported at the final inquest hearing on 8 May 2019. That medical cause is distinct from the coroner’s conclusion about intent: Beasley-Murray said the evidence was insufficient to determine whether Flint intended to die or whether his death was accidental. ITV News Anglia reported the hearing and findings.
Did the coroner rule that Keith Flint died by suicide?
No. Beasley-Murray recorded an open conclusion, rather than a conclusion of suicide or accident. She explained that to record suicide she would need to find, on the balance of probabilities, that Flint formed the idea of suicide and deliberately acted knowing the act would result in his death. She said there was not enough evidence to make that finding, and not enough evidence to conclude that his death was an accident.
“We will never quite know what was going on in his mind on that date and so that’s why I’m going to record an open conclusion,” Beasley-Murray said, according to ITV News Anglia’s report of the inquest.

What did the inquest report about toxicology and police findings?
Toxicology noted the presence of cocaine, alcohol and codeine. The reports did not give amounts, and the findings do not by themselves establish Flint’s intent or explain the circumstances of his death.
The coroner said police found no suspicious circumstances and no third-party involvement. At the opening hearing, a coroner’s officer had also said police followed protocols and that the death was not suspicious, as reported by ITV News Anglia and The Independent.
