Netflix will not release Ezra Edelman’s Prince documentary under the agreement announced with the Prince estate on February 7, 2025. That means the Edelman film and the estate’s proposed documentary are separate projects—not two cuts or two confirmed viewing options. The announcement does not say the canceled film will later appear on Netflix or another service.
How the canceled film differs from the new project
| Project | What is established | Release information |
|---|---|---|
| Ezra Edelman’s documentary | Directed by Edelman; contemporaneous reporting described the canceled cut as nine hours long. | Netflix will not release it under the February 2025 agreement. |
| Estate-produced documentary | The Prince estate may develop and produce it, featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. | The announcement gave no release date, distributor, runtime, or production schedule. |
The nine-hour figure applies only to reporting about the canceled Edelman cut; it does not establish the format or length of the replacement. The Los Angeles Times and The Hollywood Reporter reported the agreement and cancellation on February 7, 2025.

Why was the Edelman documentary canceled?
Reporting described disagreement over the film’s portrayal of Prince and objections from estate representatives. Those accounts provide context, but the joint announcement did not spell out contract terms or resolve the disagreement. The cancellation itself is confirmed; specific claims about the dispute should be understood as attributed reporting, not as findings established by the announcement.

The estate’s project was announced as something it could develop and produce, not as a film with a confirmed release plan. The announcement named no distributor, date, runtime, or schedule. Until the estate or a distributor provides those details, it is not possible to say when—or where—viewers will be able to watch it.
