The Platform is the English title of El hoyo, a 2019 Spanish science-fiction thriller directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. Its prison-like structure is built around a food platform that descends through hundreds of levels: people at the top eat first, leaving less for those below. Netflix describes the film as a social allegory; its setup also invites viewers to consider how scarcity and hierarchy shape behavior.
What is The Platform about?
The film takes place in a vertical, prison-like facility with two people assigned to each level. A platform carrying food moves down through the building. Those on higher levels can eat before it reaches the people below, making access to food depend on position as well as choice.
The premise turns an abstract problem—how people share scarce resources—into a physical system that characters have to live inside. Netflix’s official synopsis calls the film “a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest.” That is the service’s promotional description; viewers may draw their own conclusions about the film’s social or political meaning.
Is it a documentary?
No. El hoyo is a Spanish fiction feature, not a documentary. Spain’s ICAA film catalog classifies it as science fiction and also lists fantasy and thriller tags. Netflix categorizes it as a Spanish thriller, with psychological, survival, and social-issues descriptors. These are overlapping ways to orient viewers, not mutually exclusive definitions.
