The Platform 2 is a Spanish-language Netflix dystopian thriller directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. Released globally on Netflix on October 4, 2024, it returns to the Pit, where prisoners depend on a descending platform of food. Netflix calls it a sequel to the 2019 film, though its place in the story timeline is a spoiler.
What is The Platform 2 about?
The film returns to the Pit, a vertical prison in which a platform carrying food descends from level to level. Prisoners have only a brief opportunity to eat as it passes. Those lower down may be left with scraps—or nothing.

A new resident becomes caught up in a struggle over a rule-bound response to the brutal system. A faction insists that each person eat only the dish they selected as their favorite, and a powerful figure enforces the rules. That conflict drives the film’s survival-thriller premise. It can also be read as a social allegory about scarcity, authority, and collective responsibility; that is an interpretation, rather than a stated plot fact.
Netflix’s director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia described the film as “an exciting physical journey” into “that place where we are afraid to look.” Netflix Tudum

Is it a sequel or a prequel?
Netflix describes The Platform 2 as a sequel to its 2019 thriller, and it is the second film released in the series. The story’s chronology, however, is not what that label might lead you to expect.
Spoiler: the film’s timeline
Spoiler warning: Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer says the film reveals that its events take place before those of The Platform. So it is a sequel in release order, but a prequel in the story timeline. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer
