The Perfect Couple is most satisfying as a glossy, six-episode wedding-weekend mystery, not as an intricate puzzle box. The Netflix drama brings a death, a wealthy Nantucket family and a crowded suspect list together with an appealing ensemble and soap-opera energy; its familiar turns make the whodunit less surprising than its “twisty” promise suggests.
What is The Perfect Couple about?
Amelia Sacks is preparing to marry into one of Nantucket’s wealthiest families when a death disrupts the wedding and makes the guests suspects. The setup puts a classic closed-circle mystery inside a world of privilege, family secrets and polished seaside spectacle. This spoiler-free review does not reveal who dies or who is responsible.

Netflix lists the 2024 series as a six-episode limited drama, a compact format that suits its wedding-weekend setup. Susanne Bier directs and executive produces; Jenna Lamia is showrunner and executive producer. Nicole Kidman plays Greer Winbury, the groom’s mother, while Eve Hewson plays Amelia. The credited ensemble also includes Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Billy Howle, Jack Reynor and Ishaan Khatter.
Does the mystery deliver on the whodunit promise?
The series supplies the essential pleasures of the form: a death, a bounded circle of suspects and secrets that make the wedding party look less trustworthy by the episode. It keeps the investigation moving, but viewers who prize an audaciously constructed puzzle or genuinely startling reveals may find the solution and its clues too familiar.

That reservation is reflected in the critical response. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus identifies predictability as a weakness, while also pointing to the performances and scenery as strengths. One review excerpt on the site argues that the show spells out key material so heavily that it can leave less room for character attention; that is one critic’s judgment, but it captures a possible frustration for viewers wanting subtler storytelling.
Where the show is most entertaining
Nantucket as wedding-day spectacle
The coastal setting gives the series an immediate sense of place and a luxurious visual frame for its family drama. Showrunner Jenna Lamia told Netflix Tudum, “Capturing Nantucket would’ve been important for any show set in there, but for an Elin Hilderbrand adaptation, it’s a character,” adding, “It’s a main character. So we had to do it justice.” The landscape is more than a backdrop: it helps sell the fantasy of an exclusive wedding weekend even as the story turns that weekend into an investigation.

A cast comfortable with heightened drama
The large ensemble makes the wedding party feel like a social world full of competing loyalties, and the star casting is part of the attraction. TIME’s review describes the show as trope-heavy and superficial, but still fun. TIME also frames Kidman’s Greer as another of the guarded, wealthy matriarch roles she has played in recent glossy dramas. That is a critical comparison rather than a production fact, but it points to the pleasure of watching Kidman inhabit a familiar, tightly controlled persona.
Secrets and soap-opera momentum
The show leans into family secrets and heightened reactions rather than deep psychological excavation. That approach can make the drama feel superficial, as TIME argues, but it also gives the episodes an easy, camp-adjacent momentum: the fun is often in watching an immaculate social event become increasingly messy.
Is The Perfect Couple based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel of the same name, and Hilderbrand is an executive producer. Her involvement and the Nantucket setting make the novel a natural companion for viewers curious about how the screen version handles the source story. Hilderbrand told Netflix Tudum, “I waited 24 years for this!” in reference to the long path from her first novel to a screen adaptation.
Netflix Tudum reported that the publisher saw “nearly a 500 percent increase in book sales” after the teaser debuted, and said the novel returned to bestseller lists around the trailer and series launch. That figure is Netflix’s report of the publisher’s sales, not an independently audited sales measurement. If you want to compare the adaptation with its source, look for The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand.
