Spoilers for The Penguin episode 7, “Top Hat.” Young Oz Cobb knowingly traps his brothers Jack and Benny in a flooding tunnel during a game of hide-and-seek, then lies to their mother, Francis. Years later, as Sofia Falcone holds Francis and Sal Maroni tries to seize Oz’s Bliss operation, the episode’s childhood revelation throws Oz’s loyalty to his mother into a darker light.
What Oz did to Jack and Benny
“Top Hat,” the seventh episode of The Penguin, opens with Oz’s childhood. His mother, Francis, works as an accountant while Oz and his brothers, Jack and Benny, play nearby. The boys encounter a gangster who fascinates Oz, even as one of his brothers warns him away from the man.
During hide-and-seek in an abandoned building, Jack and Benny climb into a tunnel. Oz cannot follow easily because of his leg. Angry, he shuts the door and leaves them trapped. When Francis asks where the boys are, Oz tells her they went to the movies. As rain falls, mother and son stay home and watch Top Hat; meanwhile, the tunnel floods and Jack and Benny drown.
The revelation is more than a tragic accident: Oz deliberately closes the door and hides what he has done. The film gives the episode its title, while the childhood scene exposes the self-protective cruelty beneath his attachment to Francis.
