The Penguin opens with a killing that exposes how quickly Oz Cobb can turn humiliation into danger. Director Craig Zobel says the scene was shaped to show Oz’s sensitivity to ridicule—not a cool, carefully plotted move—and to establish a pattern that drives the series. The HBO/Max crime drama continues the world of The Batman, but Zobel says viewers do not need to have seen the film first.
Spoilers for episode one of The Penguin follow.
Why Oz kills Alberto Falcone
After Alberto Falcone belittles him, Oz shoots and kills him. The decision lands as a sudden eruption rather than a calculated lesson: Zobel told CinemaBlend that the team explored multiple versions of Oz’s reaction, working out how the moment should play. His explanation centers on Oz’s deep insecurity and history of being mocked. Even the nickname “Penguin” carries the sting of ridicule for Oz; it is not a neutral label in his mind.

The scene also launches an immediate plot problem. Oz has to deal with the killing and its consequences while Sofia Falcone searches for answers. The story’s pressure comes from a choice Oz makes in the moment, not from evidence that he has calmly planned a longer strategy.
The premiere establishes Oz’s recurring pattern
Zobel, who directed the first three episodes, described Oz as capable of being effective when cornered. But he also acts brashly, creating the difficult situations he then has to solve. Zobel said that pattern is visible in the premiere and recurs through the series.
#1 Best Overall
That makes Alberto’s death more than a shocking opening turn. It introduces the tension between Oz’s capacity to improvise and his impulse to provoke trouble. The cover-up and Sofia’s questions give that impulse immediate consequences.
How The Penguin connects to The Batman
The series is set in the aftermath of The Batman’s destructive climax and follows Gotham through Oz’s point of view. Zobel said the show should work as a mob story on its own, while offering continuity signals to viewers familiar with Matt Reeves’s film:
Rank #2
“I think that the goal was to make something that you didn’t have to know, really, the story of the film in order to still enjoy. Hopefully, this could be a mob show that you could just watch, but if you did know the Matt Reeves world that he had created, this would be a big primer and kind of constantly have little winks and nods toward where we’re going in the bigger picture.”
Reeves has described the series as a chance to follow Oz through Gotham after the film, shifting the focus away from Batman to a gangster reaching for power. The relationship is therefore one of setting and continuity, not a retelling of the movie.
